This category is used to list all clothing objects which provide armor to player characters when worn.

== How armor works ==
'''If a piece of armor has class X/Y, it means that it can absorb X hitpoints without taking damage, and then absorb Y more hitpoints, subtracting them from its HP, before any damage is passed to a player.'''

If you have several pieces of armor equipped, their damageless absorption takes precedence, and any absorption that deals damage to the armor is dealt evenly over the pieces equipped.

For example, if you have leather armor (1/2), leather pants (also 1/2) and leather boots (0/2) equipped, each with at least 2 HP, and you take 5 points of damage, 2 points are absorbed damagelessly, and the three remaining points are distributed evenly, so that each piece takes one hitpoint of damage. It would take 9 points of damage or more from an attack to actually deal damage to the player. (by Loftar)

While moving your armor still provides full absorption but your defense bar is negated.

"Indeed. Since the new combat system, every attack has a certain armor penetration value, with unarmed attacks usually having larger such than melee attacks." - Loftar Aug 07, 2010

A Sling is a one-handed projectile weapon that requires a [[stone]] as the ammunition. It is often used by players who have low [[Glossary#Marksmanship|Marksmanship]] skill, as it is twice as easy to aim with than the [[Bow]]. However, the sling does lower damage than the bow - 60 base damage. Quality does not increase with survival, which means you can only raise quality only if you`ve raised your MM.
The [[quality]] of the Sling is determined with the following formula:
qSling = (average.qString + average.qLeather)/2
It is [[Softcap|softcapped]] by [[Survival]]:
=== Damage ===

Your [[Perception]] attribute affects the minimum damage of ranged attacks. Your target's [[Agility]] attribute reduces your damage.
Max damage = 60 * sqrt(ql / 10)
Min damage = 0.5 * (PER / AGL) * MAXDAMAGE
|skillreq = Unknown
|objectsreq = [[requires::Soil]] x4, Tree Seed*, [[requires::Water]] (1.0 litres)
}}

Tree is a generic term which can refer to any of the following: {{#ask: [[Category:Tree]] }}. Also see the [[:Category:Tree |Tree category]].

== How to Acquire ==
To grow a tree, one needs a [[Treeplanter's_pot|treeplanter's pot]], a [[Herbalist_table|herbalist table]], water, soil x4, and a seed of the tree you wish to plant. Place the soil, water, and seed into the pot, and the pot on the table. After approximately 1.5 hours (dependant on nature-industry slider), the tree will either sprout or die. If it is dead, all you can do is empty the pot and start over. If it has sprouted, you will have approximately eight hours to plant it before it dies. Take the pot, find a spot of grassland or forest where you wish to plant it, and right click on the spot while holding the pot to get the option to plant it. The tree will steadily increase in quality while it grows until it hits maturity and thus its maximum quality.

*All products of the tree are of the same quality at a given point in time (branches, logs, seeds, etc.)
*It is recommended to give the tree a 5x5 space around it to completely grow. If anything with a hitbox (anything that stops you if you run into it) is within the space, the tree's growth will be stunted. This excludes pavement, water, and most crops.

*Trees grow faster if their roots are upon its native terrain. For example, a fir tree will grow faster than an oak tree in the coniferous forest while the oak tree will grow faster than the fir tree in broadleaf. Also note that Broadleaf and Coniferous forests look the same even if they are different forest terrains.

*While growing, trees may transform nearby tiles into its native terrain. Where and how frequently this occurs is random.

== Ways to Improve the Quality of a Tree ==

*High quality [[Herbalist Table]]: You will need high quality source lumber and fibers to craft a good quality Herbalist Table
*High quality [[Treeplanter's Pot]]: Dexterity, along with the quality of clay, seems to play a role in the quality of ceramic goods
*High quality water: No skills needed
*High quality soil:&nbsp;No skills needed
*High quality seed: No skills needed (but depends on the quality of the tree from which you took it)
*Nature vs Industry: Having a strong Nature personal belief will both increase the success of trees living and decrease the amount of time it takes for a planted tree to germinate on the herbalist table.

Enter your house, and use:
Choose a location for the cellar door to create the signpost. You can stand on a cellar door, and possibly place objects upon it, but it cannot be moved once built.

Once you have completed the construction, equip a [[Pickaxe]]. Right click on the newly-constructed cellar door, and you will begin removing a boulder. Once all boulders are removed from the cellar, it may be entered and used.

*The Log Cabin requires 16 boulders removed and gives 6x4 space.
*The Timber House requires 24 boulders removed and gives 9x6 space.
*The Stone Mansion requires 48 boulders removed and gives ? space.

All cellars have two squares unusable, the staircase which is always in the upper left corner of the cellar, and the square directly in front of it.

<h2>Important Note</h2>
On Sunday, January 9th, Jorb announced on the forum ([http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=14013&sid=23055c1d3ba97902473657cf9ca9ab85 link]) that a recent change had introduced data corruption to the current database for World 3. It was determined that the only satisfactory fix was a reset of the world. It was announced that within 36-48 hours a complete wipe and reset would occur, starting what will be known as World 4. At that time, all characters will be reset, and all players will need to make new characters. Due to the short notice and bug, no major gameplay, mechanics, or ruleset changes are expected.

World 4 is now open!
Enter your house, and use:

Once you have completed the construction, equip a [[Pickaxe]]. Right click on the newly-constructed cellar door, and you will begin removing a boulder. Once all boulders are removed from the cellar, it may be entered and used.

*The Log Cabin requires 16 boulders removed and gives 4x4 space.
*The Timber House requires 24 boulders removed and gives 6x4 space.
*The Stone Mansion requires 48 boulders removed and gives 6x8 space.

All cellars have one square unusable, taken up by the staircase, which is always in the upper left corner of the cellar.
Tanning tubs are used to turn any type of dried [[Hide|hide]] into [[leather]].

{{Key|B}}uild > Ta{{Key|n}}ning Tub

==How to use Tanning Tub==

In order to make leather in a Tanning Tub, you have to follow the steps below. Leather isn't exactly hard to make, but it is a time-consuming process.
#Acquire a [[raw bear hide]], [[raw hide]], [[raw fox hide]], [[fresh rabbit fur]], or [[raw sheep skin]].
#Dry the hide by placing it in a [[drying frame]].
#Wait 8 real-time hours for the hide to finish drying.
#Take the dried hide and place it in a [[tanning tub]].
#Fill a [[bucket]], using either a [[well]] or an open water source.
#Hold the full [[bucket]] on your mouse cursor and right-click the tanning tub to fill it, you'll need 6 buckets of [[water]] to get the tanning tub ready (tanning tub contain max 100 liters of water - 10 buckets or 1 full barrel). The tub sprite will change once there is enough water in it.
#Obtain a piece of [[tree bark]] from a fully grown [[tree]].
#Place the bark into the tub the same way you did with the water, one piece of bark is all that is needed.
#Wait 8 real-time hours for the hide to turn into leather.
#Retrieve your finished leather.

Each tub can only hold one hide at a time. The amount of leather you get is equal to the size of the hide used. Dried bear hide and dried hide (boar, cow, deer) provide four leather, dried fox hide and dried sheep skin provide two leather, and rabbit fur provides one leather.
==Note==

There is currently a [[Bugs#Tanning|bug]] that can set a tanning tub's progress to 92%.
==Formulas==
For the tanning process:

qLeather = (3*qHide + qBark + qWater + qTub)/6.

To figure out Tub quality, place a q10pelt (rabbit), q10 water and q10 bark in it.

qTub = (6*qLeather)-50

Feasting allows you to not only eat more food, but also to get more FEPs per food unit eaten.

Build a [[Table]]. The table can be equipped with eight different items. Pull up a [[Chair]] and have a seat. Now right-click on the table. You get nice little bonuses to your eating depending on the [[Quality]] of the chair, table, and of everything on it. You can see these bonuses displayed in the table's interface. You also have a tidiness bonus. This represents how well the table has been set. Psyche + Cooking makes you set tables better. While seated, and with the table's interface open, click feast. You now get to see a fork. Now click on a food item in the table's inventory. Tada! Eating, and bonuses applied.

You can create various kinds of objects to put on the table. These Symbel items degrade over time. They each have a certain chance of degrading every time a food unit is eaten off of the table. Gold stuff obviously is much slower in degrading than temporary flower arrangements. If they degrade they lose one point of quality. If they lose their last point they are destroyed. Please note that you can only get bonuses from one instance of a particular item type. Psyche is relevant for all these crafts.

Build a [[Bonfire]], load it up with fuel, light it, and feast away. There is a minimum requirement to how much fuel the bonfire needs before you can light it (it will change sprite when it's possible to light it). By feasting in sight of the grand fire, you can eat even more, the bonus determined by the collected hunger modifiers of all active tables, factored by the average charisma of everyone at the party. Please note that the FEP-bonus is only ever applied to the table in question, never shared with the extended party in any way. The person with the highest charisma should light the bonfire, as charisma of the host of the evening is obviously relevant for the bonus.

Be aware that you regain less fullness when feasting, so don't do it if you don't have the food to spare.

A timber house is a large structure which can be entered. Inside is a 6x6 tiles housing in which furniture or liftable containers can be stored. Anything liftable left in a timber house will not decay making it a good storage area especially for [[Cupboard]]s, which are notorious in being destroyed in one decay hit. Because of this, most houses tend to hold cupboards, which are excellent storage containers once the downsides has been negated with housing. Any items that can go into the inventory dropped here can still be lost, however.

==How to Acquire==
First, there needs to be a 7x7 paved ground for the timber house to set down. See [[Terraforming]] for information on how to plow a field and lay stone. Timber houses require a lot of wood and Bough (you can use any bough) so be sure to have plenty of Trees near the vicinity. Finally timber houses always face the south.
==How to Acquire==
In order to begin constructing a log cabin you must have a 5x5 paved area of ground for the log cabin to set down. See [[Terraforming]] for information on how to plow a field and lay stone. Log cabins require 100 blocks of wood, 50 boards, and 50 boughs of any type, making it unwise to begin construction without ready access to wood and boughs. The door on log cabins will always face the east, so plan accordingly before construction.

Gedrean: clean up a link

Almost all items, as well as many game-world objects, have a quality factor '''Q''', which may range from 1 to &infin;, with a standard default quality for most objects of 10 -- for example, all natural-growing trees are Q10. In general, higher Q items are simply better: high Q weapons do more damage, for example.

The in-game effects vary from item to item, with some items like buckets and linen clothing not having any effect at all. Where quality matters, it usually takes the form of the quality multiplier '''QM''':

: <math>QM = \sqrt{\frac{Q}{10}}</math>

This multiplier is 1x for Q10, 2x for Q40, 3x for Q90, 4x for Q160, and so on. It is a nonlinear increase, which just means that it becomes harder and harder to get a good multiplier for higher and higher multipliers. Since Q10 has a QM of 1x, in many places on this wiki you will just see stats given for Q10 objects. You should assume this unless the wiki page you're reading says otherwise.

To make higher-Q objects, you should use higher-Q materials with higher-Q tools. Some materials, like in [[farming]], have a natural quality "spread" of &plusmn; 6 points, which you can use to grow higher-Q foods. Others, like soil, fish, water, clay, and herbs, have a Q determined by a natural (but invisible) hot-spot on the map. In other words, you might find that one day you forage a Q31 [[Spindly Taproot]]. This means that this square has Q31 soil. If you dig around in a 5 square radius, you might be able to find higher and higher Q soil -- perhaps even Q40 at some square. You could then mark it off for later, as you can always come back to that hot-spot to collect high-Q herbs, soil, and earthworms. You might then use that soil to plant high-Q trees, which will help you make high-Q tools.

It is very common for crafting qualities to be [[Softcap|softcapped]] by a crafting skill or a vital stat. For example, if you have a Q40 bone and a Q10 branch, you can in principle make a Q35 bone saw -- but if your survival skill is lower, perhaps at 15, you will only make a Q25 bone saw, because (35 + 15)/2 = 25.

It is also very common for fractional qualities to be rounded down to the nearest integer.

=Discussion=

'''There is still much to be understood about the quality system. Use this section to discuss findings, theories, etc.'''

New crafting skills are [[sewing]], [[smithing]], [[Glossary#Carpentry | carpentry]], [[cooking]], [[Glossary#Farming | farming]], and [[survival]].

Quality of crafted goods can be dependent on any (including combinations) of the following: Quality of ingredients, crafter's skill level, and crafter's stats. Which of these three are used seems to vary from item type to item type.

==Armor and Clothing==

Backpacks and cosmetic clothing are unaffected by quality.

Armor gets increased HP and AC as its quality increases. The AC gets multiplied by QM, while the HP gets multiplied by Q/10.

*[[Leather Armor]]: Need Update
*[[Bear Cape]]: ~133 HP, AC 0/15 (1L and 8L)
*[[Chainmail Shirt]]: 900 HP, AC 75/75 (2R)
*[[Bronze Armor]]: Need Update
*[[Plate Armor]]: Need Update
*[[Leather Boots]]:Need Update
*[[Leather Pants]]: Need Update AC 25/25
*[[Hirdsman's Helmet]]: Only usable by Hirdsmen within a village. Need Update
*[[Boar Tusk Helmet]]: Need Update
*[[Soldier's Helmet]] : Need Update

==Weapons==

See the [[Weapons]] page, and Category:Weapons. Weapon damage gets multiplied by QM.

* [[Stone Axe]]: 100 base dmg
* [[Militia Sword]]: 250 base dmg
* [[Bronze Sword]]: 325 base dmg
* [[Soldier's Sword]]: 400 base dmg
* [[Battleaxe of the Twelfth Bay]]: 500 base damage
* [[Sling]]: 60 base dmg
* [[Wooden Bow]]: 75 base dmg
* [[Ranger's Bow]]: 300 base dmg

==Food==

The [[FEPs]] given by a piece of food get multiplied by QM. So, for example, a Q10 beetroot gives 0.5 PER and 0.2 CHA, but a Q90 beetroot will give 1.5 PER and 0.6 CHA.

Quality does not affect the amount of hunger that the food restores -- just the amount that it buffs up your vital stats.

==Miscellaneous==

Seeds quality is affected by your farming skill and reduced by it if its lower then the crop's Q.

Water recovers more stamina per hunger as its quality increases. Details unknown.<br />
&gt; Q 10 water goes at a rate of 5% per 5% hunger<br />
&gt; Q 65 water goes at a rate of 15-16% per 5% hunger

Animals give higher quality items as their level increases, affected by your [[sharp tool]] and survival skill [http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1885#p21850].

The quality of crafted items is equal to the average quality of the ingredients rounded down. However, it is also capped by the appropriate skill level of the crafter. Different items have different weights in averaging the quality of a final product.For example, a Q50 bone combined with a Q10 branch would make a Q20 arrow, because a bone weighs 2 and a branch weighs 6. (The formula would be (50*2 + 10*6) / 8) - These are not the true weight values of these items, these are example values. [http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1885#p22110]

=== Cooking and Ceramics ===

Cooking and pottery are both very similar. When you bake, you produce a dough based on the average Q of your ingredients, softcapped by [[Cooking]]. You then place this into an oven, which requires fuel. The quality afterwards is given by a weighted average:

: <math>Q_{item} = \frac{2 Q_{dough} + Q_{oven} + Q_{fuel}}{4}</math>

Pottery uses the same formula as well: the only difference is that you craft a ceramic based on the average Q of your clays used, softcapped by [[dexterity]]. Then the ceramic is the "dough", the kiln is the "oven", and the fuel is still the fuel.

=== Jewelry ===
* Quality for all accessories except [[monocle]]s and [[spectacles]] is calculated with quality = {{sqrt|[[smithing]]|[[psyche]]}}. (Needs confirmation: do materials have no influence on jewelry,, or is this a softcap?)
* Monocle and glass quality is the average of the materials, softcapped by smithing

=== Equipment ===
* [[Bear Tooth Talisman]] quality = tooth quality, softcapped by [[psyche]]
* Bone saw quality = (5*qBone + qBranch)/6, softcapped by [[survival]]
* [[Traveller's Sack]] quality = (qHardened Leather + qString)/2, softcapped by [[sewing]].

=== Raw materials ===
* [[Board]] quality = sqrt(qLog * qTool), [[softcap]]ped by [[carpentry]]
* Woodblock quality is simply log quality. Your Carpentry and [[stone axe]] don't matter.
* Leather quality = (3*qHide + qBark + qWater + qTub)/6.

=== Food ===
* Cheese quality will get near the quality of the trays used, racks dont seem to affect quality
* Butter quality = (4*qMilk + qChurn)/5<!---not sure, could be also (5*qMilk + qChurn)/6--->, [[softcap]]ped by [[cooking]]
* [[Butter-steamed Cavebulb]]s are affected by [[butter]], [[water]] and [[cavebulb]] quality (not by fuel though)
* Beer quality = (qWort + qBarrel )/2
* Fish quality = Fishing spot quality, [[softcap]]ped by (qPole*qLine*qHook*qLureOrBait)^(1/4)
* Grapejuice quality = (7*qGrapes + qWinepress) / 8 {{Fact}}
'''Survival limits:'''
* arrows, bone saw
* quality of [[foraging|foraged]] items
* skinning and butchering; quality = (Survival + Tool Quality + 2*Bone Quality)/4.
* bone quality only affected by survival.
The effect of survival is capped at 200.

'''Marksmanship limits:'''
* quality of bows

==From loftar==

For buildable objects, the quality is almost always calculated as such:
* The qualities of items in the individual item types are averaged arithmetically.
* The resulting average qualities of the various types are also averaged arithmetically -- often with some weights on items that should be "obviously" more important (like the iron in iron plows) -- to create the quality of the built object.

For craftable items, most are calculated like this:
* As with buildable object, the qualities of the individual item types are averaged, and then weighted together based on importance.
* If one is using any tools, like a churn, anvil, or smithy's hammer, the qualities of those are averaged with the above resultant quality -- often with a weigth of 1/4 for the tool.
* If any character attributes are involved, those attributes themselves are averaged geometrically, and if the resultant "skill quality" is lower than the "input/tool quality", the resultant quality is the arithmetic average of the skill quality and the input/tool quality.

If you don't know what a geometric average is, it is the multiplication product of the individual values, raised to the power of the inverse of the number of values. In other words, averaging values <math>V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_n</math> geometrically means calculating <math>(V_1 \cdot V_2 \cdot \ldots \cdot V_n)^{\frac{1}{n}}</math>.

As for ovens, kilns, smelter and finery forges, the quality of the resultant quality is the arithmetic average of the input item quality and the average of the oven quality and fuel quality, where the fuel quality is the arithmetic average of the fuel items put into the oven. In other words, if the item quality is <math>q_i</math>, the oven's quality is <math>q_o</math> and the fuel's quality is <math>q_f</math>, the quality of the resulting item will be <math>\frac{2q_i + q_o + q_f}{4}</math>.

As for the skills involved in crafting, it should mostly be obvious, but there are, of course, a few things to clarify:
* Sewing related recipes (including leatherworking ones) use the Sewing and Dexterity values.
* Smithing related recipes often combine both Smithing and Strength.

====Crafting formula====

Calculate items used:
:<math>q_{item} = \frac{\sum_{i = 1}^{n} q_iw_i}{\sum w}</math>

If there's a tool involved:
:<math>q_{item} \leftarrow \frac{4q_{item} + q_{tool}}{5}</math>

If there are skill values <math>s_1</math> through <math>s_n</math> involved:
:<math>q_{item} \leftarrow \left \lbrace
\begin{array}{ll}
\frac{q_{skill} + q_{item}}{2}, & \text{if\ } q_{skill} < q_{item} \\
q_{item}, & \text{otherwise}
\end{array}
\right \rbrace, \text{where\ }
q_{skill} = {\left( \prod_{i = 1}^{n} s_i\right )}^{\frac{1}{n}}
</math>

*Calculations will be made in order of top to down.

==How to use Tanning Tub==

==Note==

There is currently a [[Bugs#Tanning|bug]] that can set a tanning tub's progress to 92%.
==Formulas==
For the tanning process:

qLeather = (2*qHide + qBark + qWater + qTub)/5:

To figure out Tub quality, place a q10pelt (rabbit), q10 water and q10 bark in it.

qTub = (5*qLeather)-40

Silkmoths love to fly across grasslands and through forests, and ignore most all obstacles (Trees, Walls, Houses), but will not cross water. Because of these behaviors, it is difficult for inexperienced collectors to catch them as they go. They are very rare as well. Once caught, a male and a female silkmoth can mate within 24 in-game-hours, turning into 10 [[silkworm egg]]s at most. To do so, they need to be in the same inventory. Once a silkmoth is caught it's lifetime timer will start ticking and you should make sure not to keep them in your inventory for too long.
How exactly the timer works needs to be asked in detail to one of the devs.

==How to Acquire==

You can acquire a silkmoth, white insects with wings flying around, simply by right clicking it. The problem is, though, they keep moving. They stop after travelling for half-a-screen or so for a second before going off again in a random direction. It can take alot of patience but you will eventually catch it.

Tips:

*Bring a waterflask! You'll need the boost in stamina after a while. If you can't run, you can't move faster than the moth and then it becomes nearly impossible to catch one. Stopping to drink won't cause you to lose your silkmoth, although it may go off screen it will be in the same general area.

*Don't run constantly! When you spot it a distance off, walk up to it. Walking is the same speed as the Moth flies, so you're not losing ground. Wait for it to stop and possibly change direction towards you. When you begin to get closer to it, run after it. By doing this, you don't waste stamina.

*Intercept it! The best technique is to stand in the direction it is heading and quickly right click it as you walk towards it.
==How to Acquire==
[[Rustroot Extract]] is required to determine a suitable mining point.

When [[Prospecting|&quot;Prospect&quot;]] is used within 10 tiles of a mine location (99%), a construction sign will be placed for the mine; as such, the prospector should carry some wood blocks, because the sign will disappear if it is empty when the prospector moves again. Also it should be said that it is VERY difficult to find a mine so do not be sad if you dont find one, instead look for a village or a mine owner and trade with him if you want to get some metals.

=='''Note'''==
At the current point, many surface-accessible mines are claimed, leaving cave-accessible mines the most likely source of new mines.
== Chicken vs Fodder Quality ==

So, I tested with four Q10 hens and 1 Q10 cock in a coop with Q7 (averaged) fodder. As a control, I also placed two Q10 chicks into the coop. After 24h realtime, a notch was gone from fodder, the chicks were of lower quality (8). The hens and cock remained Q10. The eggs were 5, 6, 11, and (unknown because SOMEBODY stole the egg), though reading again I see egg is based upon a random deviation increase or decrease from parent qualities. I will continue with further day cycles to see if the Hens or Cock qualities are changed by the fodder. [[User:Gedrean|Gedrean]] 00:08, January 5, 2011 (UTC)
