There are many different types of swamp in Haven & Hearth, though they are usually only found in small sections. Some kinds of swamp have leaches swimming in them, these attach to your equipment spots and are used to regain health, but make sure you have enough SHP and are not very hungry else you may die.<br />
<br />
The other kinds of swamp (murky-water or white on minimap) are useless because you can not build on them, let alone use your boat to travel on it. Thickets (also shown white on minimap) have many trees growing in it and are best avoided, unless you are a great navigator.<br />
<br />
If you are a new player living near a swamp is good because you can heal yourself with the Leech and you can use the leaches for fishing bait. Later you do not need to do this.
You can also find some Dragonflies on the swamps, and while they are tricky to catch, they`re still nice source of experience early-game. One can also find Royal Toadstool, Candleberry and Dewy`s Mantle on the swamps.
How to Acquire
Rustroot Extract is required to determine a suitable mining point.

When &quot;Prospect&quot; is used within 10 tiles of a mine location (99%), a construction sign will be placed for the mine; as such, the prospector should carry some wood blocks, because the sign will disappear if it is empty when the prospector moves again. Also it should be said that it is VERY difficult to find a mine so do not be sad if you dont find one, instead look for a village or a mine owner and trade with him if you want to get some metals.

Note
Since the 1/11/2011 restart (1/10/2011 in some places), everything is up for grabs again. Mining holes have also been redone, stay tuned for more information as it becomes avaliable.

Mines can now be built everywhere, but it`s not guaranteed there will be ore. Thus, Prospecting does not lose it`s worth. The mineholes are way more expensive - you need hardened leather to build them as well as glue. At last, mining shafts are required as mine may collapse if you`ll not build them.

Currently water, clay, and soil are the only resources with qualities that cannot be raised by the player direct and must be obtain by a source. Sources of high quality resources are scattered about the entire world and have a center source that has the highest quality which decreases the further from source the square is. Keep in mind as when you discover a source that each time you dig at the site, the quality might decrease by one.

The source quality can increase if the source spot is untouched for a few days. It is advised when encountering these high quality spots that you wait until they reach high quality before using these sources.

Note that all of the resources here are vital in creating a high quality tree.

Water
Water is relatively the easiest to find. First you need a container that can hold water such as a kuksa or a bucket. Fill the container with water from a shallow before moving it back to your inventory. Then hover your mouse over the container. It should display "Container with quality # water".

If the quality of the water is above 10, then a source is near. Empty the container and move towards a direction and fill it up with water nearby. If the quality decreases, then move to the other direction. The closer you are to the source, the higher the quality. Repeat this until it starts decreasing again. That is the area where the source is near at.

If you are on a river, use a boat to go to the other side and do this relatively near the area where you found the high quality and repeat the process.

A simpler but less rewarding way to obtain quality water is to build a well which may possible water higher than quality 10. If so, then there is a good chance that a water source is nearby.

Soil
The best way to find higher quality soil is actually through foraging. Foraged items such as Chantrelles or Spindly Taproot will have qualities directly linked to the soil that they are on top. If you find one of these items with a quality higher than 10, then there may be a source of higher quality soil nearby.

At the World 4 soil quality spots aren`t as rare as before; for example, it`s no problem to find a 20-30 one.

Dig upon the tile that you foraged to obtain the soil and check quality. Then move towards any direction and repeat the process. If the quality decreases, then move to the opposite direction. The closer you are to the source, the higher the quality. Repeat this until it starts decreasing again. Once this happens, move towards a direction perpendicular to the line you are digging. Unlike water, it is possible to find the "sweet spot" in which the quality of the soil peaks.

Because digging takes stamina, it is recommended to carry some tea or food if you are planning to do an incursion for soil. Also carrying some branches helps mark areas in which you tested the soil at.

While some newer players will chop trees down and build chairs at random, others will sometimes leave their own marks or chairs near high quality soil. You may be able to find a good source by digging when you see a single paved tile or chair in the middle of nowhere. It's still recommended to check around the area even if you do find a good source at such a spot.

Clay
Clay is one of the most difficult resources to find as it takes a good amount of stamina and there is no starting point in which you can begin your search. Find a shallow water tile to start, preferable relatively close to your home. Dig at the spot for a single clay. If it stops diging after the first or second attempt, then you need to move approxmately 2 minimaps towards a direction and try again. Keep doing this until your character constantly dig at a location without stopping..

When you do find it, decrease the length of the tiles between search to about 5 tiles. If the quality decreases, move the other direction. Continue to dig towards the direction while the quality increases until it starts to decrease again.

If you are on a river, use a boat to go to the other side and do this relatively near the area where you found the high quality and repeat the process.

Because of the large amount of stamina needed to search for clay, it is recommended that you use a boat carrying food/tea to make your search easier and faster.

Soil is a resource that is used in creating tree saplings to plant for trees. It is also one of the primary factor if the quality of trees planted. Because trees are used to create many different structures and furniture, the quality of trees are very important thus high quality soil is valued and may be traded to people that lacks access to them.

The quality of crops is also affected by soil quality, thus it`s recommended to build your farm near some nice-quality soil spots.

As of now, there is no known way in increasing the quality of soil other than finding it. However, an easy way to find quality soil is by foraging, as quality of foraged plant is directly relational to the soil it is on.

For more information on finding high quality soil, go to this link.
Soil is dug from any forest tiles or grassland. It takes approximately 3.5 seconds to dig up one unit of soil.

If you are a new player and being attacked by animals there are a few things you can do to survive.

At the World 4, you`ll be most likely killed if you`ll be KO`ed by any creature - they`ll just murder you. Thus, if you`re not sure if you`re able to slay beast - just run, it is the best option.

The first and best advice - if you have neither armor nor battle skills, be sure to check out the terrain nearby - any passing boar or bear will eat you alive. If you`re deep in forest and the boar is trying to rape you, you may try to run - running speed of heartling is a bit faster than the normal speed of boar. This will save your life, though, only if case you have a river nearby. There is a little trick - when you`re in a deep water, animals can`t chase you just because they can`t move through any water tiles. However, do not try to swim as it will get you to the bottom of the river pretty fast(swimming is highly dependant on constitution attribute).
If you`re near your house, you can just get in. Animals can`t move through doors. This will work for caves and mines too.
Mouflon can be tamed to become a Sheep. See this page for more info about taming wild animals.

Mouflon spawn in large packs that will engage you simultaneously if you attack one of its herd.

Mouflon can be fed Four-Leaf Clover by right-clicking a mouflon with it. This allows them to be shorn for Wool of a quality level equal to the clover fed. They can be shorn as many times as they are fed clovers, and if fed multiple clovers they will be shearable for however many they were fed.

If multiple clovers of different quality are fed to the same sheep without sheering it, then all the clovers will average to one quality. Example: A sheep is fed a Quality 20, 30, and 10 clover then shorn. All three wool extracted will be quality 20.
Foxes are not aggressive to players but will attack any rabbits or chickens nearby. A player can pick up the corpse of the small creature afterwards.

At the World 4, you`ll be most likely killed if you`ll be KO`ed by any creature - they`ll just murder you. Thus, if you`re not sure if you`re able to slay beast - just run, it is the best option.

Combat behavior
They will attack with a bite or claw when their attack meter is full. They have moves that will grant them initiative points as well as filling both attack and defense meter. Sometimes they'll use a move which grants them combat advantage. It happens rarely, but when it does, it's used repeatedly as long as fox has enough initiative points. Most of the time, they ignore this skill for the full duration of the battle, even if they have enough points to use it.

How to fight them
If you are not able to damage them at the first attack, you may want to use dash to gain initiative points to use sidestep for balance while keeping your defense meter full. You only need a few balance advantage before getting initiative to attack.

If you find yourself losing defense more than you can recover, you may want to take the offensive path instead by using charge to get initiative to about 9-14 before using opportunity knocks before following that quickly (or it will regain the defense meter) with an attack. Hopefully, you can cause it to flee or at least severely wound it.

Or you can also trap them in construction signs first then shoot at them -- Take a lot of branches and make piles of wood; make sure they can't escape. If you want to be extra safe, trap yourself too.

Deer fight solo, but can be found in herds. They have the ability to heal other animals and themselves for (DeerLevel)*11 but its capped at 100. It is recommended to either have a fast method of damage or to hunt in a group to kill a deer.

At the World 4, you`ll be most likely killed if you`ll be KO`ed by any creature - they`ll just murder you. Thus, if you`re not sure if you`re able to slay beast - just run, it is the best option.

When you butcher the corpse you will recieve 9 Raw Deer Meat and 4 Intestines.

Collecting the bones will result in 6 [DeerLevel*5+(Survival/2)] quality Bone Material and 1 set of Deer Antlers, softcapped by your Survival and your Butchering Tool.

Combat Behavior
Deer will attack with a stomp when their attack meter is high enough. They will also use a move that will give them initiative points and another that will fill both attack and defense meter. They will also heal themselves in the midst of battle as well. Deer are notably stronger than boar in terms of combat skills.

How to combat them
Use dash to counter against the defense drain and side step each that they use the balance special. Alternatively you can simply try to use opportunity knocks a few times before hitting them to undo the intiative gain and damaging them.

If it starts getting too much advantage over you, try to be able to use opportunity knock a few times followed by a valorous strike to return advantage back to 0.

Unless you have a strong sling and high marksmanship, it is not recommended to use a sling against a deer as they can heal damage dealt to them and you may not be able to damage them fast enough to overcome the healing as range damage does much less consecutive damage than melee. If you insist on sniping them alone, you should make sure the deer are isolated, your sling quality is at least 25, your marksmanship is at least 50, and that you have plenty of stones available. You may get lucky and be able to kill it within a few hits, but the battle could also drag on for a long time. You may be able to pull it off with weaker stats and even when other deer are present, but following these guidelines gives you a pretty good chance at a fast kill.
An aurochs can be tamed to become a cow or a bull. See this page for more info about taming wild animals.
Aurochsen spawn in herds on Grassland (bright green terrain), Heath and Moors (yellow terrain with grass).

At the World 4, you`ll be most likely killed if you`ll be KO`ed by any creature - they`ll just murder you. Thus, if you`re not sure if you`re able to slay beast - just run, it is the best option.

Note: The singular noun is aurochs while the plural is aurochsen.

Quoting Loftar:

The singular is obviously "aurochs", seeing how it is cognate with English "ox". Accordingly, the only reasonable plural form is, of course, "aurochsen", seeing how "ox" still uses the Saxon plural form "oxen" even in Modern English.

Combat Behavior
Aurochsen will attack with a stomp when their attack meter is high enough. They will also use a move that will give them initiative points and another that will fill both attack and defense meter. Sometimes they will use a special that will shift the balance towards their favor by one if they have enough initiative points.

An aurochs will not flee if severely wounded (the same is true of mouflons).

How to fight them
Because the whole herd will swarm you if you attack one of its members, range combat is a near must, especially considering that multiple aurochsen can obtain combat advantage on you as well as deplete your defense meter at alarming speed. Since it is difficult to trap the entire herd, it is best to create a wall of signs around yourself with a boulder inside so that you can attack them from a range with relative ease.

Getting Milk from Aurochsen
You can get 2L or more of Milk from an aurochs. To do so, you need to get one or more Four-Leaf Clovers and to have a Bucket in your inventory. Pick up a clover from your inventory and right click on an auroch, then pick up a bucket and right click on the aurochs to milk it. Each bucket can hold the milk of up to five milkings (needing 5 clovers) whether from one aurochs or several.

Bears are considered the toughest and most vicious animals in the game. Bears will, like Boars, attack you unprovoked at and above level 5. A level 10 bear will hit for approximately 800 HP. They will not attack you while you are unconscious, though.

At the World 4, you`ll be most likely killed if you`ll be KO`ed by any creature - they`ll just murder you. Thus, if you`re not sure if you`re able to slay beast - just run, it is the best option.

Also, if a bear is trapped, it will destroy lesser wooden items to if it has a path to you rendering most conventional construction sign traps useless.

Additional: Including fencing. Anything less than a palisade won't do.
If you are new to the game, avoid all bears (and boars) at all costs unless you have a suicide wish. You will not be able to even get close to damaging it, let alone killing it.

Collecting the bones will result in BearLevel*10+Survival/2 quality Bone Material and 4 Bear Teeth

Combat Behavior
The bear is going to start off with using a move that gives it 6 (!) initiative and a boost move before attacking you with either a swipe or a bite (the most dangerous of the two). Then it will fill up its attack and defense like most other animals. Fortunately it does not try to gain advantage like the boar or auroch does.

Bears go berserk when they're close to death, and they will start using a skill to instantly refill their attack bar. You will need to be ready to do a lot of damage fast if you plan to finish the bear before it finishes you.

Once a Bear yields in combat due to archery, even if they go berserk, they will not attack you if you continue to use archery.

If sufficiently confined in a small space, a Bear that has yielded in combat will not attempt to escape, even if it can easily break through the barriers holding it.

How to fight it
Melee: Bears can take off a large chunk of defense, if not outright hurt you. You will need combat stats of around 150 to combat against a lvl X bear melee without calling down thunder. If not, then you are best to fight against it at a range where it cannot hit you. You want to opt for slide if your defense starts to drop, especially after an attempted bite. Otherwise you can use dash or even slide to keep your defense high while gaining initiative.

Alternative tactic for X bear and ~70 Melee skill: Get behind some cover (boat or wall will do) and start calling down the thunder till you get 30 initiative. Then opportunity knock the bear 4 times in a row, immediately followed by a valorous strike. Retreat, repeat. You should not lose more than 40 hp each time with proper gear. The third strike should be a simple sting (remember, the bear has ONLY 800 HP, and you can do up to 300 damage at once!) to put him aflame. Then, finish him off with a valorous strike.

Cheap ranged tactic: Shoot at the bear from a boat. Eventually he will run away. Immediately break combat, and he should stop running. Get within shooting range and snipe him again, he will try to run again, so break combat and continue in that pattern until he dies. You lose most of the LP from this method, but at least you get all that yummy bear meat while not becoming food yourself.

Other cheap ranged tactic: Shoot at the bear from a boat or shallow water that's out of its reach. When it runs away, don't break combat; this fight isn't over yet! Stand on dry land where it would be able to attack you and just wait there. The bear will usually come back for more, but its motivation will be completely crushed and it won't even bother to attack you. It'll just follow you around. Pelt it with another stone and it will probably run off again. Move away from the spot you were just standing at; if you remain in the same spot, the bear will come back, but it will run away and never be seen again as soon as it does so. Moving a little bit usually causes it to hang around. With some luck, you'll be able to kill the bear and get the full LP.

If your combat skill is not high enough, then use range to shoot it where it cannot reach you or simply avoid it.

A boar is one of many different kinds of wild animals in the game. Boars also stand out as being one of the tougher creatures due to their aggressive nature and the likelihood of encountering them on forest terrain. Fortunately, boars are notably slower than most other animals as their fastest movement speed is somewhat slower than a player's running speed, making it possible to outrun them given enough time and stamina. Finally, boars may be tamed to become domesticated pigs.

At the World 4, you`ll be most likely killed if you`ll be KO`ed by any creature - they`ll just murder you. Thus, if you`re not sure if you`re able to slay beast - just run, it is the best option.

Collecting bones from a slain boar will result in Level*4+Survival/2 quality bones: 1-2 Boar Tusk and 4 Bone Material.

Combat Behavior
Boars will attack with a stomp when their attack meter is high enough. They will also use a move that will give them initiative points and another that will fill both attack and defense meter. Sometimes they will use a special move that will shift the balance towards their favor by one if they have enough initiative points. If their advantage gets high enough, boars will start using a move that will rapidly increase their attack and defense meter (indicated by a throbbing heart).<br />
<br />

How to combat them
Use dash to counter against the defense drain and side step each time they use the special move to shift balance in their favor. Alternatively, you can simply try to use opportunity knocks a few times before hitting them to undo the initiative gain and damage them.

If the boar starts gaining too much advantage over you, try to use opportunity knocks a few times followed by a valorous strike to return advantage back to 0.

If things go too badly, try to find waters or a house to retreat towards to get out of their attack range. Boars move a bit slower than running speed, so you should be able to outrun them provided your stamina can hold.

It should be noted that when the boar's health begins to fall past a lower level it will turn passive and attempt to flee.

Tips
It has been mentioned that boars are one of the few animals which run slower than a Hearthling's third speed several times. Use this to your advantage if you need to flee from them or when trying to hunt them. If they begin to run away from you, you can punch them from behind for maximum damage, even with no red bar. For an easy kill against high levels boars, sling rocks at them from a boat, and then when they start to run you can hop out and chase them down.
Trivia
I've seen most boars just before the sun was setting down and durning it. What means, they are most active that time. But that may be just "luck" meeting 4 boars in 10 minutes. (added by Fritz)
A Sling is a one-handed projectile weapon that requires a stone as the ammunition. It is often used by players who have low Marksmanship skill, as it is twice as easy to aim with than the Bow. However, the sling does lower damage than the bow - 60 base damage. Quality does not increase with quality, which means you have to raise quality only if you`ve raised your MM.
The quality of the Sling is the average of all the strings rounded down. It is softcapped by survival if the quality is higher than the crafter's Survival skill; if your Survival is lower than the quality of the strings, then the quality of the resulting sling will be negatively affected.
Each crop has a chance to produce seeds of slightly higher quality than the ones planted.
