What is it
A Drying Frame is used to dry fresh hides from animals. Dried hides are further tanned to produce leather or crafted into items.
The drying frame can also be used to dry Wild Windsown Weeds (WWWs), but it takes significantly more time than on a Herbalist Table. When dryed seeds turn out as Wheat, they do not germinate. As Hops, Beetroots and Onions don't have seeds, they are directly obtained from WWWs on the frame.

Note: A drying frame is destroyed within two decay hits and cannot be built inside. To reduce the risk of losing the drying frame and whatever hides or Wild Windsown Weed you have on it, it should be built on paved ground. When a drying rack turns red, it is in risk of being destroyed and should be repaired (you need 1 branch).

Drying rack quality does not affect the skins or WWWs dried upon it.

A mudflat is a barren brown area, only inhabited by the occasional stray animal. While mudflats cannot be plowed, you can pave or plant grass on them. It is also possible to build directly on them, though inadvisable because of decay.
Some people refer to Mudflats as Deserts.

Curiosities endemic to mudflats are the Tangled Bramble and the Thorny Thistle. Acre Clay can only be obtained from digging on mudflats. Feldspar occurs non-exclusively on mudflats. Hazel nut trees rarely grow in mudflats.

In spite of similar appearances, using the "Stomp to Dirt" landscaping command does not produce mudflat terrain and can therefore not be used to create artificial acre clay nodes.
<h2>Important Note</h2>
On Sunday, January 9th, Jorb announced on the forum (link) that a recent change had introduced data corruption to the current database for World 3. It was determined that the only satisfactory fix was a reset of the world. It was announced that within 36-48 hours a complete wipe and reset would occur, starting what will be known as World 4. At that time, all characters will be reset, and all players will need to make new characters. Due to the short notice and bug, no major gameplay, mechanics, or ruleset changes are expected.

World 4 is now open!
As of the 4th world, mines can be built anywhere. Their cost also has risen, now including ropes, leather, boards and hardened leather. If you don't want to throw all of that away on a guess, try prospecting. 0.1 L of Rustroot Extract is depleted each time the Prospecting skill is used, regardless of whether or not you find minerals.

On prospecting, now also depending on Rustroot Extract quality, you might find a vein of minerals. See following forum topics for details.
Available metals are: Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper and Tin. The system seems to be bugged a bit as of Jan 22nd.

Using the metallurgical qualities inherent in the wild growing Rustroot, mixed with water into an extract of the said root, you can analyze soil samples to determine their metallurgical compositions. This allows you to triangulate, and ultimately, determine locations suitable for mining. There is no need to dig up the soil samples, simply use "Prospect" under the adventure menu.

Baking Duration
Each branch used as fuel lasts approximately 5 minutes. The time required for a specific recipe is measured by number of branches. Leaving dough in an oven for too long results in burning, so it is recommended to place only the required amount of branches in the oven when lighting it, and to not bake recipes with different durations at the same time. Exceeding the baking duration produces Ash.
A Block of Wood or a Board may also be used as fuel. Using blocks of wood is rather pointless, because they can be split into 5 branches of the same quality, while high quality blocks require high quality trees.
Boards are a better way to improve the quality of your baking goods, as saw quality is much easier to raise. A board serves as 2 Branches worth of fuel. <ref>Tested with a Honey Bun, a Carrot Cake, a loaf of Bread and a loaf of Bark Bread in one go - bun was ashes, cake was ready, bread and bark bread were dough. Used with a Treeplanter's Pot and any one of Apple Core, Fir Cone, Mulberry, nut, pine cone or any catkin to create a new Tree of that type. Also used to dry wild windsown weeds to random seeds, to hatch silkworms and to dry (and ferment) tea leaves.
How to Acquire
Build &gt; Herbalist Table
Building a herbalist's table requires plant fibres.

1. Ask somebody nicely for plant fibres. (Or aquire them by less legal methods.)

2. If nobody's willing to donate or trade, harvest your own fibres from hemp or flax. To get those, dry wild windsown weeds (WWW) on a drying frame, and with a random chance you get a flax or hemp seed. Plant seeds into ploughed land, wait, harvest, gather the fibres, repeat. While drying WWWs on the herbalist's table is much faster than on a frame (ingame time: 2.6h instead of 16h), you can start farming without a table and build one after you get hemp or flax.

How to use
Place any of the precursors of items mentioned to the right in the herbalist table and wait. Tree's take about 2.5 hours to sprout from treeplanter's pots; Silkworm Eggs takes about 8 hours to hatch; Fresh Tea Leaves take 30 minutes to dry into green tea leaves; those ferment into Black Tea Leaves in about 8-12hours if left on the table. As currently (18. April 2010) both kinds of tea leaves do the same, there is no danger in fermenting green ones.

You can also dry WWWs on the table, but this is only useful if your table is >q10, as the default drying frame will be q10 and produce q10 seeds from default q10 WWWs. If you are looking for wheat, drying WWWs on the table is NOT recommended. If a WWW dries into a wheat seed and is left on the table, it will germinate and be lost for farming. Refer to beermaking information on intentional germination. Wheat seeds, once germinated, will not change anymore, so the table is safe for beermaking purposes.

The ability to stake a claim on land, making it and everything on it your property. This includes the inside of mines, and cabins.

How to Acquire
To stake a claim, you need the Yeomanry skill.

To build a stake claim, navigate to dventure > Stake laim.

Notes
*The claim starts of as a 4x4 square around the totem. You can expand your claim at 50 LP per square. This is done by increasing the dimensions of the claim; you cannot add individual squares.

*You may only own one claim, but you can at any time declaim your area. This will refund your LP used and allow you to place a new claim. You do not need to repurchase the Yeomanry skill.
*The person who finishes building the claim owns it, regardless of whether they have Yeomanry or not.
*Claim stakes do NOT decay. They also can NOT be destroyed with the vandalism skill. You have to resort to trespassing and theft to get something useful from a forsaken claim.
*As a general suggestion, declaim land before leaving the game for extended periods of time - you get the LP back, and the materials are nothing too valuable.

Jlt314:

Every new player can do this:

Look for an apple, a hazel-nut or a mulberry tree, found in broad-leaf forests. If you find one, right click it to pick the fruit which will then appear in your inventory. You must have at least one empty square in your inventory to do this.

Then right click on the fruit for the option to eat it. If you eat an apple you will have to drop the apple core to empty space in your inventory. Every tree produces only a limited number of fruits, so you'll have to move on someday. And if you decide to venture outwards, make sure to have some surplus food in your inventory.

You might be able to scavenge fox kills. Foxes kill rabbits. The usual place to find a fox killed rabbit is at the edge of the water where the rabbit was trapped. Foxes also kill chickens. Chickens are found in grassland, moor or heath. When the fox attacks them, they scatter. So if you see chickens running through the forest there is a good chance a fox has been hunting them and you might be able to find one or more. Fox killed rabbits and chickens are just the same as the ones that you kill yourself, except that you don't need to have the hunting skill to make use of them. Keep in mind that forest areas spawn boars and bears.

If you get the foraging skill you can:

Look for chanterelles. These are pale orange speckles found in forests on the ground. Look for spindly taproots, although eating them might be a waste. These are dark brown roots that grow in forests on the ground. Right click them to pick them. Look for blueberries. These are plants that grown in forest or on heath or moor. (Higher exploration and perception&nbsp;enable you to find more.)

Raid ants nests. You can only do this without being attacked by the ants if you do not have hunting. Just click on the red mound between the ant swarms. The option "Raid" will pop up. Not all ants nests will have food in them, but they will all give you lp. Sometimes an ants' next can have several food items in it. All items found when you raid an ants' nest are food.

If you have the hunting skill you can:

Look for rabbits. You need at least four empty squares in your inventory in a 2 x 2 square. Get as close as you can to a rabbit. Wait until it stops moving and stand exactly beside it, but so that the rabbit is still visible to click on. Right click on the rabbit.

If it runs away and you missed it immediately click the round button with crossed swords beside the picture of the rabbit that pops up in the top right corner. This will stop the aggression between you and the rabbit and it will stop running away, giving you a chance to find it and try again.

You will need to right click on the rabbit in inventory to wring its neck, and then right click again to butcher it.

If you are either in heath or meadow you can try to find chickens. They are caught&nbsp; and killed the same way as rabbits but are easier to catch.

However you might be lucky enough to find a dead animal, abandoned by some other hunter and not face the danger of the animal fighting back. Foxes for example sometimes kill rabbits and chickens, and higher level players kill animals for the learning points but don't bother skinning or butchering them. Keep your eyes out for dead animals. You will need the hunting skill to butcher any animals.

Avoid eating any meat raw as you get sickness fep which can cost you hit points. As long as you can find branches to make a fire you can cook it from the craft menu.

If you have Will to Power and some form of attack such as unarmed combat:

You can try and raid an ants nest. Before you raid the nest, attack and kill all the swarms of ants that surround it, or else they will attack you all at once. Recent changes in the game have made ants much harder to kill than they were at first.

If you have a sling:

You can attack and try to kill larger game, such as foxes and deer. They will not attack you until you attack them so you can fence them in to make it easier and shoot at them safely from outside the enclosure. Hunting enclosures are usually made out of fires. Just put one branch in and then move on to make the next fire. It will make a row of little signposts that the animal cannot escape from. A good place to enclose an animal is just at the edge of water. They often stop there and it takes fewer fires to enclose them. Foxes are the easiest to kill and then deer. However deer will heal animals that you are in combat with, so if you try to kill just one of a herd of deer the other deer will keep healing it making it harder to kill.

Aurochsen and mouflon are not good quarry to practice on as they mob you if you attack one of them. You will need to enclose the entire herd, with your target animal enclosed seperately from the others.

If you have a boat you can attack any animal, including bears as long as you keep just out of range. This is one of the better ways to hunt aurochsen and mouflon.

Fishing is not a good first option

You will need to have fishing line, hooks and bait or a lure. Hooks require bones which usually requires hunting first although they can be scavenged. Fishing line can be made from a spindly taproot, so you need foraging first. To use it as a fishing line simply left click on the root when it is in your inventory and then right click on the top square of the fishing rod. If you have carpentry you can make a wooden fish lure from a wood block made out of a tree stump. If you have stone working you can make a rock lobster lure from a stone you chip off a boulder. Unless you can make a lure or find leeches in a marsh you will need to dig forest earth to get worms for bait and this uses a lot of stamina and thus may make you hungrier than whatever fish you catch.

Fishing is done where the fish jump. If you don't see any fish jumping there are no fish there.

While fishing is not the best option for a single player, it is probably the best starting skill for a multiplayer settlement if founded close to a lake or a river. Dividing the tasks (1 hunter, 1 forager, 1 stoneworker, 1 lumberjack-carpenter) allows for the steadiest income of food possible without relying on luck to find prey or edible plants. This might also lead to excessive multi-char-playing abusing the hearth secret feature. A player might just make 4-5 characters and specialize them in the skills mentioned above.

If you have the farming skill you can do this:

Sometimes you can find Wild Windsown Weed which can be dried to different seeds. Carrot seeds can be planted for Carrot that can be eaten (or planted again) raw. Grapes can be eaten raw too but you will not be able to replant the seeds until you have the winemaking skill.

There are two ways to heal your hitpoints.
Gauze
Make a gauze and bandage your head. This will continously heal hitpoints. Gauze is seldom available to newer players as they need make it it from the fleece of a Mouflon. This works either by domesticating it into a sheep and shearing wool, or by feeding a wild one a four-leafed clover; the wild mouflon will allow you to shear it for 1 unit of wool afterwards. Gauze works slowly, but very surely, and with no risk up to 10 HHP per piece of gauze. You can only use one bandage at a time and cannot wear any headgear while your head is bandaged. Used gauze turns to bloody rags.
Leeches
Leeches heal your HHP (the middle number), but do damage to your SHP (the first number). They randomly attach to your equipment slots when walking through green swamps. This is the most available method for new players.
First you need to locate a swamp. This terrain shows greeny-blue on both the map and on the minimap. There is an almost identical terrain that shows greeny-blue on the map but white on the minimap and doesn't have leeches. It is a good idea to collect leeches and store them for future use if your dwelling is not conveniently close to a marsh.
When the leeches have attached to your equipment slots, they begin drinking your blood. This is what causes your soft SHP (the left number) to go down. A single leech takes about 10 SHP to bloat. If your SHP goes down to 0, your character will drop unconscious, AND you will then lose HHP! Thus you should start using leeches for healing when your SHP is maximal (i.e. equal to your HHP). SHP regenerate relatively fast, but cost hunger. Keep in mind that regenerating SHP has not been affected by the hunger-stamina fix.
You will not always get a HHP back for every time you lose a SHP to leeches, so you have to be patient. Don't overdo it by covering yourself with leeches all over. Bloated leeches stay on the character, so a K.O. shouldn't prove lethal, unless you were desperate and your HHP already in single digits.
Pick bloated leeches off and put them into your inventory, or a container, to save for another time. Replace them with unbloated leeches if available. Bloated leeches go back to being unbloated leeches after 8 real-time hours. Unbloated leeches do not starve. Leeches adjust quality by sucking your blood, defined by constitution value. High-quality leeches on average regain more HHP per use. Thus taking leeches previously used by high-con characters is beneficial to the player, but will decrease their quality.
Bloated and unbloated leeches can of course be used for bait.
Stats increases
This is not strictly a way to heal yourself, but for every attribute point of strength you gain one more hit point, and for every attribute point of constitution you gain two more hit points. This means that if you are down to 5/5/36 and raise your constitution, your hit points will become 7/7/38. After the last FEP update, bread has 0 FEP, rendering new character spam moot. Pike (Str and Con FEPs) is rare, too, as fishing spots on lake shallows became rare.

*at a Beach: Sand
*in Shallow Water:&nbsp;Clay
*in Mountains: Stone&nbsp;

This command turns normal ground into Plowed Ground. Does not work on swamps, mountains, hearthlands and beaches, thus restricted to forests and grassland.

Notes:&nbsp;
#Plowing by hand (i.e. without a Wooden Plow or Metal Plow) requires excessive amounts of Stamina, about 35% per tile. A fully rested character will be too tired to plow after 2 tiles.
#Plowing removes bushes.
#Plowing doesn't affect plants or objects on the plowed tile.

A kiln is required mainly to burn clay goods to ceramics. Keep in mind that you need certain ceramics for prospecting, cheesemaking, masonry and planting trees, and other kiln products to make tea and glass and to process iron.

How to Aquire
You'll need:

*45 Clay
*Pottery skill
*a 3x3 paved area to place it (see Lay Stone in Terraforming)

#Plow a 3x3 area.
#Lay Stone on the plowed area.
#Learn the Pottery skill.
#Aquire clay. Keep in mind that the kiln has a quality value, determined as the average of the used clay quality.
#Build -&gt; Construction -&gt; Kiln to place the construction site.
#Place clay from your inventory in the construction site dialog box. (Note: construction sites disappear if you leave without putting anything into them first.)
#Repeat steps 4. and 6. until you have 45 units of clay in the building site.
#Click Build and wait for your character to finish constructing it.
Alternatively, click "Build" after adding every new load of clay. This will stop people from nicking your clay off the kiln building site.

Placement tips:
*When built, the Kiln will need Branches or blocks of wood as fuel for the fire; constructing your Kiln near trees is a good idea.
*Many Kiln products require further clay. As clay quality may vary within a short trip distance, both building a permanent settlement next to a high quality clay node and running clay digging trips are considerable actions.

How to use
Adding fuel:

#Left-click a Branch in your inventory.
#Right-click the Kiln.(Hold down shift to avoid repeating step one.)
#Continue adding Branches (or blocks of wood, which raise the bar faster) this way until you have as much fuel as you'll need (it's going to take 5 or more branches.)
#Right-click the Kiln without a branch to see the Kiln's inventory and fuel indicator (the bar on the right.)

Adding the unburnt object:

#Create an unburnt object such as the ones in the Craft -&gt; Ceramics menu. Alternatively, obtain blocks of wood, sand or germinated wheat seeds.
#Right-click the Kiln.
#Drag the unburnt object from your inventory to the Kiln's inventory. Alternatively, place blocks of wood, clay, sand or germinated wheat seeds in the kiln to obtain charcoal, bricks, raw glass or malted wheat.

Click Light to start the process. Seems to take about an hour. (Editor's note: would be nice to have a list of durations here, and/or in individual items' pages.)

Note: burning clay and sand together with ceramics goes well, as bricks and raw glass don't take damage on overburn. Burning wood to charcoal or malting wheat should be done under control, less you burn valuable organic materials to ashes.

How to Acquire
You'll need to have the leather working skill in order to make leather. Leather isn't exactly hard to make, but it is a time-consuming process.

*1. Acquire a raw bear hide, raw hide, raw fox hide, fresh rabbit fur, or raw sheep skin.
*2. Dry the hide by placing it in a drying frame.
*3. Wait one real-time day for the hide to finish drying.
*4. Take the dried hide and place it in a tanning tub.
*5. Fill a bucket, using either a well or an open water source.
*6. Hold the full bucket on your mouse cursor and right-click the tanning tub to fill it, you'll need 6 buckets of water to get the tanning tub ready.
**The tub sprite will change when there is enough water.
*7. Obtain a piece of tree bark from a fully grown tree.
*8. Place the bark into the tub the same way you did with the water, one piece of bark is all that is needed.
*9. Wait 8 real-time hours for the hide to turn into leather.
*10. Retrieve your finished leather.

Each tub can only hold one hide at a time. The amount of leather you get is equal to the size of the hide used. Dried bear hide and dried hide (boar, cow, deer) provide four leather, dried fox hide and dried sheep skin provide two leather, and rabbit fur provides one leather.

While drying WWWs on the herbalist's table is much faster than on a frame (ingame time: 8h instead of 24h), you can start farming without a table and build one after you get hemp or flax.

How to use
Place any of the mentioned items to the right in the herbalist table and wait. Tree's take about 2.5 hours before it's completed, Silkworm Eggs takes about 8 hours, Fresh Tea Leaves takes 30minutes and Black Tea Leaves takes about 8-12hours.
