Animal Qualities

Lunarius Haberdash:

So you have finally managed to tame an animal and keep it fed. Upon taking a look at the inspect window your head starts spinning from all the values listed. What gives with all this crap? Many have asked themselves this question as they have shouted at their computer screens. Nobody knows the machinations of the hearth gods, but there is a method to this madness.

==Values Overview==

Lets take it one step at a time. First hit the inspect window on your domestic animal. In this case we will look at a horse.

Moving on we see another set of values:
*Endurance
**Pony power drain rate
*Stamina
**Satiety drain rate
*Metabolism
**Eating rate/Satiety regain rate

This is where people get tripped up. These particular values are '''only applicable to horses''' and refer to the horses pony power and satiety. If it were a sheep we would see wool quality and quantity. Think of these values as being the most distingushing for each animal.

The rest of the values are the same for each animal
*Meat/Milk quality
**Percentage modifiers to ESV values
*Meat/Milk quantity
**Modifiers to the amount of products provided
*Hide quality
**Percentage modifier to ESV values
*Breeding quality
**Softcap during breeding (confirm)

The qualities are easy, but the quantities are a little trickier. They aren't flat value increases and potentially follow the same quality rules seen elsewhere (40 is double, 90 is triple). Breeding quality certainly does something during breeding, but since it isn't a percentage increase its hard to say what it actually does.

==Satiety and Wellfedness==

The two bars refer to the animals 'energy' levels. These affect all values and abilities of an animal

*Satiety
**Reduces over time naturally
**Reduces rapidly if the animal is being used (like riding a horse)
**Regenerates when an animal eats from a food trough

Note: Horses can eat from grass tiles, albeit very inconsistently. Potentially useful for long journeys.

*Wellfedness
**Starvation damage taken when satiety stays too low for too long
**Once lowered it is permanent, and negatively affects all qualities of the animal

==Milk==

[[Milk]] is produced by every animal because every newborn requires a source of milk. The difference is what animals can be milked. Horses, for example, do produce milk but they cannot be milked by hearthlings. Instead the milk is provided to newborns as their '''only source''' of food. If a newborn has no access to milk then it will start taking starvation damage.

Only females that have given birth can produce milk at all. The milk quality may result in stat changes for newborns, but this is hard to confirm. Cows give the most milk, with sheep giving some. Horses and pigs do not allow for hearthlings to collect milk.

Milk stored in [[Barrel]] can feed baby animals if there is no lacating adult females present. This process is done automatically as you cannot manually feed milk to babies.

==Animal Specifics==

Sheep
*Unique Stats: Wool Quantity/Quality
*Gives a little bit of milk
*Reproduces fast
*Eats modestly

Horses
*Unique Stats: Metabolism, Stamina, Endurance
*Can be ridden like wild horses, but last far longer
*Reproduces modestly
*Can be used to pull wagons
*Eats modestly

Pigs
*Unique Stats: Truffle Snout, determines truffle finding ability
*Reproduces fast
*Eats like a pig

Cows
*Unique Stats: None listed, gives more milk
*Reproduces slowly
*Can be used to pull wagons
*Eats voraciously

<!-- disabled:[[Category:Trees]], should use a other category as Tree (if cataloged), as Tree is not a specific tree-type but a general object-type classification -->

'''[[:Category:Trees|Tree]]''' is a generic term which can refer to any of the '''{{#ask:[[object_type::tree]]|format=count}}''' species. Following is a list of links to their pages: {{#ask:[[object_type::tree]]}}.

== Tree Farming ==

To grow a tree, one needs a [[Treeplanter's Pot]], a [[Herbalist Table]], 1 liter of [[Water]], 4 units of [[Soil]], and a seed of the tree you wish to plant. Place the Soil, Water, and seed into the pot, and then place the filled pot on an herbalist table. After 1 hour and 15 minutes, the tree will either sprout or die. If it is dead, all you can do is empty the pot and start over. If it has sprouted, you will have approximately eight hours to plant it before it dies.

Take the pot, find a spot where you wish to plant it, and right click on the spot while holding the pot to get the option to plant it. The tree will steadily increase its size, but its quality, and the quality of the products gathered from it, stays the same as is determined when it is first grown ('''See below section: ''Ways to Improve...''''') If you chop a tree or bush down early, its logs and stump will have lower quality than the quality of the tree.

=== Growth Rate ===

Most, if not all trees seem to take about 150 hours (a little over 6 days) to fully mature on any forest terrain. On other terrains, such as grassland, they grow much slower.

As they grow, trees convert natural tiles around them into the forest biome they're planted on. If it's not growing on a forest tile, it will create a generic type of forest called [[Wald]].

=== Stunting ===

Trees that are planted without using a [[Treeplanter's Pot]] can randomly become stunted during growth. The chance to become stunted at some point during growth is determined upon planting, and is not caused (as it was in legacy Haven) by nearby items, which means that trees can be planted close together and close to other objects. [[Skills]] related to trees, such as Forestry and Druidic Rite, seem to affect stunt chance.

Stunted trees give wood of a lesser quality, limited by their growth percentage. Other products such as seeds are unaffected by this and are always of full tree quality. Logs from stunted trees also produce less blocks and boards.

Stunted trees do regenerate their resources.

If a tree is planted with a [[Treeplanter's Pot]], it will never be stunted.

== Ways to Improve the Quality of Farmed Trees ==

*High quality [[Herbalist Table]]: You will need high quality source lumber and [[Finer Plant Fibre]] to craft a high quality Herbalist Table.
*High quality [[Treeplanter's Pot]]: Quality is softcapped by [[Dexterity]], [[Masonry]] and [[Farming]] and dependent on the quality of the [[Clay]], [[Fuel]], and [[Kiln]] used. Since a recent update, most pottery products (such as the Treeplanter's Pot) will have their quality ''halved'' without the use of a [[Potter's Wheel]]. The wheel also affects the quality of the product (for better or for worse).
*High quality [[Water]]: Water quality depends on the location at which you gather it.
*High quality [[Soil]]: Just as water, Soil quality is dependent on the location you gather it at. See [[Finding high quality water, clay, and soil]] for more information.
**[[Localized Resources|Bat Guano]] or [[Mulch]] can be used instead of soil, which is generally of a higher quality.
*High quality seed: Same quality as the tree of which it was taken.
*[[Farming]] skill: The quality of the tree is [[Softcap|softcap]]ped by the Farming skill of the player who plants the seed in the Treeplanter's Pot.

Best matching Tree quality formula so far:<!-- additional empty line before math-part intentional -->

<math>\frac{_{q}Soil*2 + _{q}Water*2 + _{q}Pot*3 + _{q}Table*3 + _{q}Seed*15}{25} (-5, +5)</math>

== Combat Behavior ==

Aurochsen will attack with a stomp when their attack meter is high enough. They will also use a move that will give them initiative points and another that will fill both attack and defense meter. Sometimes they will use a special that will shift the balance towards their favor by one if they have enough initiative points.

An aurochs will not flee if severely wounded (the same is true of [[mouflon]]s).

== How to fight them ==

Because the whole herd will swarm you if you attack one of its members, range combat is a near must, especially considering that multiple aurochsen can obtain combat advantage on you as well as deplete your defense meter at alarming speed. Since it is difficult to trap the entire herd, it is best to create a wall of signs around yourself with a boulder inside so that you can attack them from a range with relative ease.

== Getting Hair from them ==

Right Click the Auroch and it will give you the option to "Pull Hair"
Use this with extreme caution as it can equally get you a new Curiosity or a dead Hearthling.
Each Auroch yields hair only one time.

==Getting Milk from Aurochsen==

You can get 2L of [[Milk]] from an aurochs. To do so, you need to get one or more [[Four-Leaf Clover]]s and to have a [[Bucket]] in your inventory. Pick up a clover from your inventory and right click on an auroch, then pick up a bucket and right click on the aurochs to milk it. Each bucket can hold the milk of up to five milkings (needing 5 clovers) whether from one aurochs or several.
