Caves are special areas found randomly scattered across the game world in the sides of cliffs; due to the isometric projection of the game, you will only find them in east or south facing cliffs. They may be found on any cliff, except for cliffs on Mountain terrain. Within a cave, you will find Stalagmites randomly scattered throughout. If your Perception and Exploration is high enough, you may also find Cavebulbs, or Cave Clay in those caves which have areas of shallow water. There is currently one creature that can appear in caves - Troll. It appears randomly, when a tile is mined. A chanse of getting one is very small, about 1%.

Properties
Caves behave differently than other areas of the game, and there are several qualities worth noting:

*Caves do not have a minimap and may not be mapped using the Cartography skill, making exploration difficult.

*Caves are dark. You will need a Torch or other means of illumination to get around easily.

*Caves may have more than one entrance and the size of caves may vary greatly from one another.

*Cave walls can be mined directly, it is possible for caves to contain a mine. Use Prospecting to discover if a cave has any minerals.
*Caves do not take decay hits, making them ideal places to protect objects from decay.

*When trying to create various Cheeses, caves count as a mine for the aging process.

Tips
Caves can be big or small; bigger caves may be confusing with wide open cavern spaces, twisting tunnels which connect up with each other, or far reaching tunnels which lead to an entirely different entrance than the one you entered. Caves may also have deep water, making it difficult to explore every nook and cranny.

However, there are some tricks which might be used to help exploring caves. Since it is possible to build in them, leaving yourself a path of construction signs or dropping stones chipped from stalagmites leading back to the entrance is recommended when encountering multiple tunnel junctions. Additionally, the challenge posed by cave darkness may be overcome with the use of those game clients which have a "nightvision" function, though this may be considered cheating and not in the spirit of the game. As far as the deep water sometimes found in caves is concerned, it is generally agreed to leave the water as a barrier to your exploration due to the extreme danger posed by the Swimming skill.

Tea fills up about 45% stamina per full mug. Drinking tea does not increase hunger like drinking water does.

Tea also grants you "The Warmth of Tea" Buff which gradually increase your LP learning rate as the duration pass to an additional base 20%. The quality of tea affects the rate at which the learning rate increases each interval; this in turn increases the highest point of learning rate you can obtain when the buff is as its peak.

There is no difference between green tea and black tea.

How to Acquire
To brew tea, you must add water and fuel to a cauldron, right click the cauldron and light it, make the tea.
*This requires an empty tea pot and green or black tea leaves x2 in your inventory.
*Finally there needs to be at least one liter of hot water in the cauldron.

The quality of tea is affected by your cooking skill.

How to Use
In order to drink tea from a tea pot you need a mug. Mugs can hold 0.3L of liquid, meaning you get 3 1/3 mugs of tea per pot.
Intestines and meat are obtained upon butchering the corpse. After butchering the corpse, bones (and similar objects) are left on the ground and can be picked up. Silkworm eggs are acquired through a unique process (see the object's page for details).

See Skill List. Also see the skill tree.

Incrementable Skills
Unarmed Combat
Unarmed Combat also refers to the non-incrementable skill, Unarmed Combat.
*Affects the effectiveness of moves in combat whose weights are affected by Unarmed Combat (such as punches and dodging).

Melee Combat
*Affects the effectiveness of moves in combat whose weights are affected by Melee Combat while fighting with weapons such as Stone axe, Battleaxe of the Twelfth Bay, Militia Sword and Soldier's Sword. e.g. Sting, Valorous Strike.
*Also affects the chance of blocking with shield.

Marksmanship
*Increased speed of aiming with sling and bows.
*Softcaps the crafting of bows.

Exploration
*In conjunction with Perception, determines how often you will find herbs and other items in different areas.
*When anyone commits criminal acts in Haven and Hearth, they will probably leave behind a scent. Exploration determines how easy it is to find those scents, and how frequently they may be used to track the perpetrator (Perception*Exploration).

Stealth
*Influences visibility and quantity of crimes scents, which you leave (Intelligence*Stealth).

Sewing
*Increases the softcap a character has on the quality of leather and silk items that are crafted.
*You cannot craft items of a higher quality rating using sewing recipes higher than your skill value (sqrt(Dexterity*Sewing)).

Smithing
*Increases the softcap a character has on the quality of smithing production.
*You cannot craft items of a higher quality rating using smithing recipes higher than your skill value <math>sqrt(Strength*Smithing)</math>.
*You cannot craft jewelry of a higher quality rating than your skill value <math>sqrt(Psyche*Smithing)</math>.
*Smithing does not affect the quality of wrought iron, steel, or bronze.

Carpentry
Carpentry also refers to the non-incrementable skill, Carpentry.
*Increases the softcap a character has on the quality of many wooden items, mainly boards.
*You cannot craft items of a higher quality rating using carpentry recipes higher than your skill value.

Cooking
*Increases the softcap a character has on the quality of all cooking recipes that do not involve ovens. e.g. Affects the quality of Bread dough, not bread itself.
*Stat can be raised by wearing a Chef's Hat.
*Note that the softcap on the quality of Roasted Meat is determined by Survival, not cooking.
*Gives a tidiness bonus to The Symbel.

Farming
Farming also refers to the non-incrementable skill, Farming.
*Increases the quality of the seeds/plants you harvest (randomized +5\-5).
*You cannot grow up plants of a quality rating higher than your skill value + 3.

Survival
*Increases the softcap a character has on the quality of herbs picked.
*Increases the quality of meat, bones, and hides taken from animals.
*You cannot craft items of a higher quality rating using survival recipes higher than your skill value.
*Survival recipes: fishing gear, ranged weapons, roasted meat, boiled egg, cone cow.
*The hardcap for Survival is 200. There is little benefit in going above 200.

Molotov:

This quick reference details the stat-increasing FEP gained from food easily obtained and processed in the wilderness. Thus high-tech foods (e.g. all cheese and all sausages) are not mentioned, and high risk foods described appropriately. While archery is a low-tech (branches, stones, string, maybe bones, 2 basic required skills) and useful way to deal with most animals, the use of bow and quiver disables other weapons and tools and backpack use and thus limits you.

Food quality turns FEPs into fractions, giving you decimal values. Survival skill improves the quality of all roasted meats and fishes, Nettle Shirts and Nettle Pants improve Survival skill.

Strength
*<strike>Roasted Boar Meat (2) - hunted by "walling in" and shooting</strike> boars can now destroy structures, rendering this useless; you should instead shoot them from a boat
*<strike>Roasted Bear Meat (15) - forget this. bears are agressive and can tear down structures. pretty much no way except sniping from a boat, which is medium-tech and limited, unless you bait the bear. if you can kill a bear fair and square, you probably don't need this guide anymore</strike>
*Ant Soldiers, Ant Queens - ants only take like ~10-15 Unarmed Combat Skill to raid by punching them to death one by one. Alternatively let them chase you a fair ways and then lose them (they are slower than you). Return to the nest, raid it and run away before the ants get back to attack you
*Roasted Brill - very common fish, FEP spread between Strength and Dexterity 1:1
*Roasted Pike - rarer fish, FEP spread str-int-con 2:2:1
*Pumpkin Flesh Gives 1:1 str:con, neither attribute is bad to have more of.

Agility
*Roasted Rabbit Meat (1) (easily obtained by hunting. make saws and hooks from bones; if possible, start your own leather production with rabbit furs. rabbits are common in pine-fir forests)
*Roasted Eel (rather common fish. if possible, store fish filets for a while and increase the "survival" skill to improve roasted fish quality, or try to amass a certain fish to get higher chances with the desired attribute, while eating other stuff and getting attributes randomly)

Intelligence
*Roasted Fox Meat (1) (same as boars)
*Roasted Perch (again a rather common fish, see above)
As of March 2011, Intelligence affects your Attention in the new LP system.
*Blueberries (obtained by foraging)

Constitution
*Roasted Beef meat(2) (unless you raise cattle for hides, slaughtering milk cows is rather dumb. Hunting wild aurochs, while possible by "wall in and snipe", will make you unpopular among aspiring cattle farmers)
*<strike>Bread (if you get your hands on wheat, build a quern, produce flour, build an oven and start baking. consider baking high-tech)</strike> (As of March 2010, this item no longer applies)
*Pike meat is risky due to FEP spread, but still easier to get than tame cows.
*Pumpkin Flesh Gives 1:1 str:con, neither attribute is bad to have more of.

Perception
*Carrots - Carrots don't add much to Perception but they are quick and easy to get
*Peas - same issue as carrots. Provides very little in the way of FEP, but 90% of it is perception
*Roasted Deer Meat (2) (deer can heal each other! hunt by fencing single animals and sniping, if at all)
*<strike>Roasted Plaice - supposedly a lake fish, rare, FEP spread</strike>
Perception is extremely useful to find herbs, including Taproot (single non-crafted fishing line source), Rustroot(single mean to find mining spots), and Wild Windsown Weed seeds (random chance to find any plant).
Currently the most useful skill for beginners, and very hard to raise. If you can't raise perception, you'll have to spend valuable LP on the exploration skill instead.

Charisma
*Roasted Raw Mutton(1) (sheep) - found in herds near grasslands. Do note that if there's a large town immediately nearby they might prefer to domesticate them. It's your choice if you think it's worth them possibly getting annoyed over you killing the wild sheep.

*Grapes(1) (dry Grapes and eat Raisins instead)
Charisma is used for Feasting and The Symbel. These are mostly high tier actions though, so don't worry about raising it.

Dexterity
*Chantrelles (1) (common plant food)

*Roasted Chicken Meat (1) - Chickens don't spawn in pine forests, they spawn in grassy areas (grassland, heath, moor). If you see an oddly coloured area on the map, check it out. If there's no trees and lots of tall grass wander and you may find a flock of chickens.
*Roasted Roach (rare to common fish, comparatively little FEP but no FEP spread)
*Roasted Brill (very common fish, FEP spread between Strength and Dexterity)
As of March 2010, dexterity does not affect player actions (e.g. better chances in fishing, digging). The primary uses are for cloth making related crafts such as sewing nettle pants.

Psyche
There is no easy way to raise Psyche by hunting/gathering. That being said, psyche is mostly for crafting jewelery. As a beginner, don't worry about it. If you do find any psyche foods (other than rats) consider saving them to trade. Most are very valuable.
*Ant Empress (see above for ant hills, FEP spread dex-psy 5:4)
Psyche is in general hard to raise. There are 4 known foods to provide Psyche FEP. Those are Butter-steamed Cavebulb (high-tech and produced from very rare cavebulb mushrooms), the Ant Empress mentioned above, Ring of Brodgar, a high-tech multicomponent cake, and Wonderful Wilderness Wurst, a demanding sausage requiring the meat of five animals.

It should be noted that Rat on a Stick also gives a negligible amount of Psyche FEPs, at the cost of a chance for the Black Food Event which hurts HHP.

Bears are considered the toughest and most vicious animals in the game. Bears will, like Boars, attack you unprovoked. A level 10 bear will hit for approximately 800 HP. They sometimes will attack you and kill you while you are unconscious.
To get to you, bears will destroy any objects obstructing their path with lower than Soak 25, meaning only Palisades, Brickwalls and wall of Strongboxes can stop bears from chasing you.

The quality of all bear materials (Raw Hide, Meat, Intestines, Bones/Teeth) is equal to Bear Level*20. Raw Hide, Intestines, and Meat are softcapped by Survival and your carving tool. Bones are only softcapped by Survival

Combat Behavior
The bear is going to start off with using a move that gives it 6 (!) initiative and a boost move before attacking you with either a swipe or a bite (the most dangerous of the two). Then it will fill up its attack and defense like most other animals. Fortunately it does not try to gain advantage like the boar or auroch does.

Bears go berserk when they're close to death, and they will start using a skill to instantly refill their attack bar. You will need to be ready to do a lot of damage fast if you plan to finish the bear before it finishes you.

Once a Bear yields in combat due to archery, even if they go berserk, they will not attack you if you continue to use archery.

If sufficiently confined in a small space, a Bear that has yielded in combat will not attempt to escape, even if it can easily break through the barriers holding it.

How to fight it
Melee: Bears can take off a large chunk of defense, if not outright hurt you. You will need combat stats of around 150 to combat against a lvl X bear melee without calling down thunder. If not, then you are best to fight against it at a range where it cannot hit you. You want to opt for slide if your defense starts to drop, especially after an attempted bite. Otherwise you can use dash or even slide to keep your defense high while gaining initiative.

Alternative tactic for X bear and ~70 Melee skill: Get behind some cover (boat or wall will do) and start calling down the thunder till you get 30 initiative. Then opportunity knock the bear 4 times in a row, immediately followed by a valorous strike. Retreat, repeat. You should not lose more than 40 hp each time with proper gear. The third strike should be a simple sting (remember, the bear has ONLY 800 HP, and you can do up to 300 damage at once!) to put him aflame. Then, finish him off with a valorous strike.

Cheap ranged tactic: Shoot at the bear from a boat. Eventually he will run away. Immediately break combat, and he should stop running. Get within shooting range and snipe him again, he will try to run again, so break combat and continue in that pattern until he dies. You lose most of the LP from this method, but at least you get all that yummy bear meat while not becoming food yourself.

Other cheap ranged tactic: Shoot at the bear from a boat or shallow water that's out of its reach. When it runs away, don't break combat; this fight isn't over yet! Stand on dry land where it would be able to attack you and just wait there. The bear will usually come back for more, but its motivation will be completely crushed and it won't even bother to attack you. It'll just follow you around. Pelt it with another stone and it will probably run off again. Move away from the spot you were just standing at; if you remain in the same spot, the bear will come back, but it will run away and never be seen again as soon as it does so. Moving a little bit usually causes it to hang around. With some luck, you'll be able to kill the bear and get the full LP.

Another cheap ranged tactic: Try to lock the bear in or out of your palisade or brick wall. You can shoot the bear safely from the opposite side of the wall without it running off. This is only effective if you find a bear close to a gate. The one word of caution is to make sure you have enough time to run back into or out of your gate and lock it back before the bear catches you.

If your combat skill is not high enough, then use range to shoot it where it cannot reach you or simply avoid it.

Curiosity is a mechanic, introduced in World 5, that allows a hearthling to develop Learning Points. It is implemented by studying peculiar objects either found or created in the game.
The Study Interface, found by pressing the second button on the character window, is where curiosities can be placed for study.
You can't study more than one curiosity of each type at the same time, but you can restudy the same curiosity as many times as you want.
The sum Mental Weight of your curiosities can't exceed your Attention Limit, which is equal to your base Intelligence.
The quality of the curiosity is known to have an effect on the total LP gained. The exact formula is unknown for the moment.

Do note that not all curiosities are created equal. Cat Gold for instance has a very long study time, but contrary to what was first thought it also has a low LP gain. The concept is that as the int of a character rises, you will have attention to spare so that you can also study the lesser curiosities on top of the better ones. Unless of course you're rich enough to have access to the best ones constantly that is. And since quality effects the potency of a curiosity, as the world becomes established and item qualities begin to rise some items may gain popularity due to this mechanism.
