Available metals are: Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper and Tin.

How to Acquire
A mine hole must be built on a paved 3x3 area.

A mine hole may be built anywhere. In order to place a mine hole near available ore, one should prospect the area first, however, it is not necessary. Prospecting requires Rustroot Extract to determine the location of an ore vein. If you don't have access to rustroot, building a mine may just take more underground labour before it digs up any ore.

Note
Since the 1/11/2011 restart, Mine Holes will now lead you to the second layer of the world, wich can also be acessed by cave entrances.

Mines can now be built everywhere, but it`s not guaranteed there will be ore. Thus, Prospecting does not lose it`s worth. The mineholes are way more expensive - you need Hardened Leather to build them. Lastly, Mine support are required as the mine may collapse if you do not build them.

A mine hole built inside your compound should be walled off with a Palisade or Brickwall as it is possible for raiders to tunnel into a mined area from elsewhere and gain entrance to a village or compound through an unsecured mine.

The quality of the boards depends on the quality of the tree, the quality of your saw, and your carpentry skill level.

How to Acquire
Right click on a log while having either a saw or bone saw equipped and the option "Make Boards" appears. A bone saw makes only 4 boards, while a metal saw makes 6. However, it is often easier to get a high quality bonesaw than it is to get an equal quality metal saw, so sometimes a bone saw is still desirable when you want quality boards.

Your Carpentry skill acts as a softcap for board quality. The formula for board quality is as follows:

board ql = sqrt(saw ql * wood ql)

if (Carpentry < board ql) then board ql = (board ql + Carpentry) / 2

Example (q10 Tree, q50 saw, 3 Carpentry)

board ql = sqrt(50 * 10)

board ql = 22.36

board ql = (22.36 + 3) / 2

board ql = 25.36 / 2

board ql = 12.68

board ql = 12!

This is due the fact bone saws are based off of the Survival skill and Bone Material quality; the metal saw involves metal quality and the Smithing skill. It's fairly easy to get a 150+ quality bone saw, but Wrought Iron is much more difficult to improve.

Curiosity is a mechanic introduced in World 5 that allows hearthlings to develop Learning Points. It is implemented by studying peculiar objects either found or created in the game.
The Study Interface, found by pressing the second button on the character window, is where curiosities can be placed for study.
You can't study more than one curiosity of each type at the same time, but you can restudy the same curiosity as many times as you want.
The sum Mental Weight of your curiosities can't exceed your Attention Limit, which is equal to your modified Intelligence.
The quality of the curiosity is known to have an effect on the total LP gained. <br/>The formula for the LP gained is <math>LPgain = BaseLPgain * sqrt(quality/10) </math>.

Do note that not all curiosities are created equal. Cat Gold, for instance, has a very long study time; but contrary to what was first thought, it also has a low LP gain. The concept is that as the intelligence of a character rises, you will have attention to spare, so that you can also study the lesser curiosities along with the better ones (unless, of course, you're rich enough to have access to the best ones constantly). And since quality effects the potency of curiosities, as the world becomes established and item qualities begin to rise, some items may gain popularity due to their potential for quality.

An example of the quality issue is the Cone Cow versus the Dandelion. Dandelions take twice as long for the same base LP gain. However, to counter for this you can find higher than quality 10 dandelions quite easily, whereas it takes a fair amount of effort to get higher quality cone cows (planting and growing high Q trees).

Base LP should be given for the Curiosity at 10ql and for a learning ability of 100%.

*Cellars can also be used to make Cheese when a Cheese Rack is placed inside of it.
*Two cellars in one house lead to the same room.

How to Acquire
You can only build a cellar on the ground floor in a house such as a Log Cabin, Timber House, or a Stone Mansion.

Enter your house, and use:
Build &gt; Construction &gt; Construct Cellar

Choose a location for the cellar door to create the signpost. You can stand on a cellar door, and possibly place objects upon it, but it cannot be moved once built.

Once you have completed the construction, equip a Pickaxe. You must have Locks & Bolts to do this. Right click on the newly-constructed cellar door, and you will begin removing a boulder. Once all boulders are removed from the cellar, it may be entered and used.

*The Log Cabin requires 16 boulders removed and gives 6x4 space.
*The Timber House requires 24 boulders removed and gives 9x6 space.
*The Stone Mansion requires 48 boulders removed and gives 12x8 space.

All cellars have two squares unusable, the staircase which is always in the upper left corner of the cellar, and the square directly in front of it.

Villages are a convenient way of managing communities. They work as a shared claim which prevents non-members from interacting with village-owned objects and the special village officials get certain benefits.

Each village has a village claim, or idol, which sends out influence in a large area, this area can be expanded with statues and banners to make the village larger. The village claim is similar to land claims, except that it only protects objects, containers, buildings, mines etc.; however, anyone may wander on village ground as they wish. Since unauthorized use (i.e. by non-members) of village property requires criminal action, looting a village will generate scents.

Verify
Villages maintain a pool of authority, which is generated as members earn LPs based on their intelligent and charisma. The idol, banners, and statues drain authority and lose effectiveness if the authority pool is fully drained. This also allows other to destroy the authority objects.

If you have a village you can build Crossroads in it. This can be really useful because it can useed to get in or out of village without need of keys. You also get an ability to teleport to the village idol.
Ranks
Lawspeaker - Can revoke(destroy) personal claims in the village, can choose the chieftain, can exile a village member, can wear lawspeaker gear and can make crossroads.

Chieftain - Can make people hirdsman, can summon hirdsman to him(teleport), can make people member of the village, can wear chieftain gear, and can make crossroads.

Hirdsman - Can wear hirdsman gear.

Village member - Can do everything(use/destroy/take things etc) in a village influence without leaving scents (the lawspeaker, chieftain, hirdsman are all members of village).

Non-members: Anyone else needs special skills to use, destroy, vandalize, steal in a village's influence and leave scents when they do.

Creating villages
Villages are started by making a village idol, then having up to 5 people with Yeomanry to right click on it (lawspeaker first), and then clicking "make village". After some dramatic fire animations, a village is created. The cost to create a village is 30,000 LP and it is divided evenly among the founding members. (One person with 30,000; two both with 15,000; etc.)

Two bars of copper and one bar of tin makes three bars of bronze. Bronze is a stronger metal than copper and tin, and can be used in the production of many types of tools. In addition, weapons and armor can be crafted from bronze that, while not always as strong as wrought iron or steel equipment, are generally much cheaper and less time-consuming to make. Bars of Bronze can be used to make repairs to plows made out of cast iron, and vice versa.

The main hurdle in acquiring bronze is the need for two types of metal, which cannot be procured from a single ore vein alone. Thus trade is often required in order to acquire sufficient stocks of both metals that may be used in producing bronze.

Quality
Quality of bronze bars seems to be determined by: (Qcopper+Qcopper+2*Qtin)/4, rounded down.

How to Acquire
A metal plow is an object used to plow a field. When a player right clicks a plow, he assumes control of the plow with the player moving behind it. Using a wooden plow uses considerably less stamina than Landscape &gt; Plow Field. The metal plow is one of the few items that can be moved without picking it up (although you can pick it up). It also moves faster than the Wooden Plow moving at running speed as oppose to the wooden plow's crawling speed.
After right clicking the plow, left click an area to move the plow towards that area. Each time a plow leaves a tile, it will plow that field regardless if how far it went previously. A plow, however, cannot traverse through paved ground. To stop plowing, right click anywhere on the screen.

Food Event Points (FEP)
Your Attributes (Stength, Agility, etc.) are increased by eating various foods. Most food provides a number of Food Event Points (FEPs) towards various attributes, detailed in the FEP Table.

By placing the cursor over the bar below the statistics on the character sheet, you can see a Bar showing how many FEPs you currently have, in total and by attribute, and how many you need. To increase a stat, you must initially accumulate a number of FEPs equal to your highest attribute (ignoring modifiers). Accumulating FEPs that contribute to different attributes, however, will lower the total number required. E.G. If you eat food that provides only Strength FEPs you will need X total FEPs to increase an attribute, but if you then eat food that provdes Dexterity FEPs, you will need <X FEPs. This only applies the first time you eat a food that contains FEPs for an attribute not in the bar.

Which attribute is increased is probabilistically determined by how many FEPs you have towards each attribute. For example, if you only eat Bear Salami, then upon accumulating enough FEPs to increase a stat, you will have a 57.14% chance of Strength increasing by one, and a 42.86% chance of Charisma increasing by one. After an attribute is increased, your current FEPs are reset to zero, so any overflow is lost (though it still affects the determination of which attribute increases before the current FEPs are reset).

See the Survivalist's Quick-Reference for a list of FEP foods available to those without access to higher tech things, such as a Meat Grinder.

FEP Requirement Reduction
FEPs that you need to fill a food bar are reduced for each and every unique food that you eat while filling that FEP bar. The first food you eat on a completely empty bar will reduce the required FEPs by 30%. The second type of food that you eat will reduce that bar by another 21%, and it continues to be reduced less and less for each new type of food that you eat.<br/>
NOTE: The FEPs given by the food do not matter, as long as the type of food if different. So, for example, if you eat Roasted Fox Meat and Blueberries (both give 1 INT), the bar will still be reduced.

FEP and stat gaining
Although new players start out having issues keeping their character full on food, it quite quickly reverses as a settlement gets set up. Eventually emptying the food bar becomes a chore that must be done in order to gain stats. Eating a variety of food makes this go much more quickly, but often involves introducing the possibility of gaining stats of a type you're not currently interested in. Obviously there's a balance of eating as many food types as possible and eating only the FEP types that you want. Better quality food helps too since it increases the quantity of FEPs a food gives without changing the amount of fullness you gain from it.

NOTE: If you "overfill" the bar with FEPs, ie eating a food worth 10 FEPs when you only needed 1 to level, they will be included in the proportions that determine which stat is gained. It's a waste in the sense that you didn't need to eat that high a quality of food to fill your bar, and none of it slops over to the next FEP bar.

Example
Joe has 15 in all attributes. So he needs 15 FEPs to get his next attribute increase. He eats enough bear meat to give him 10.5 Strength FEPs, and his Strength goes up by one. Wait, he needed a total of 15 FEP's didn't he? This is an example of the "variety bonus" that's applied to eating. The first item he eats reduces his required FEP's by 30%, to 10.5 from 15. Because he ate only STR giving FEP's, his STR went up to 16.

Joe now has 16 STR, so he'll need 16 FEPs for his next attribute increase. He eats some bear meat, reducing his needed FEPs to 11.2 (30% reduction). Later that day he decided he'd like to eat blueberries. Upon eating blueberries his total FEPs required drops to 8.8 (21% reduction from 11.2). The variety bonus concerns food types, not the FEPs they give. Both cooked perch and blueberries give pure INT FEPs, but they are two items as far as the variety bonus is concerned.

At the end of the day, he's eaten only cooked bear meat and blueberries, giving him 4.0 STR FEPs and 4.8 INT FEPs. When the food bar is full, the proportion of the whole that an FEP type represents of the food bar becomes the chance that he will gain that stat. As a result, Joe has a 45.5% (4.0/8.8) chance of gaining STR and a 54.5% (4.8/8.8) chance of gaining INT. Despite having more chance of getting INT FEPs, Joe gets another STR point and his total STR goes up to 17.

If INT had gone up to 16 instead of STR getting another point, his total FEPs required to level would not have changed. Because his STR went up though, he'll have to eat more FEPs next time around to get another stat point. This of course could be compensated by the variety bonus if he has more food types around to eat instead.

Notes
As per the example, since increasing FEPs is based on your highest attribute, increasing your highest attribute is not recommended, since it will affect how many FEPs you require to raise every other attribute. Before letting one stat get completely out of hand, considering raising your other stats for a while so you'll have more of them when you want them. Raising a lvl 10 stat when you have 200 strength is just as difficult as raising strength another point.

Farming and quality of seeds
The quality of seeds is affected by the current quality of the seed in your possession, and limited by the Farming Attribute level. It is also soft-capped by current soil quality.

The equation for quality is (seed quality + farming skill + (random -5 to 5) )/2 rounded down (need verification).

<br />
<b>WARNING:</b> Harvesting a crop of higher quality than your farming skill will result in lower q harvested seeds. Planting is not affected by the farming skill.

Each crop has a chance to produce seeds of slightly higher quality than the ones planted. So if you trying to raise the quality of your seed, you should harvest your fields and then only plant the highest quality seed from that harvest; over time, your average seed quality will tend to rise to your farming skill limit.

How to plant seeds:
To plant seeds in a plowed field you must left click the seeds in your inventory and then right click on the plowed field you wish to plant them on. If the seeds are kept in Seedbags, the bag can be used to plant them instead of picking up each individual seed. Wait about 48 (depending on the crop) hours and harvest.

Using well-placed beehives will speed up this process.

NOTE: Plowed fields will revert back to their original tile type over time.
