This skill uses Perception and Exploration to be able to see various plants, herbs, roots and berries that you can pick. This Skill can also allow you to raid ant hills.

In-Game Text
"High and low, up above and down below. The forest is a wild larder, and the heath an untamed apothecary, for those who know where to look.

Foraging gives you the ability to find and gather wild growing herbs, mushrooms, roots and flowers, usable for a wide variety of purposes, beyond their obvious utility in medicine and cuisine. Perception and Exploration are key values when looking for anything hard to find, and a well trained Survival skill will ensure that you harvest herbs with good results.

Notes
*The frequency of finding herbs is based on the multiplication of perception and exploration skill (commonly called Per * Exp).
*The quality of the herbs is based on the soil it is on capped by survival skill.
*There is a base value to start spotting foragable goods. Higher stats will increase the spotting chance, until reaching 4 times the base value.

Worship, which shows which items your require to Worship.

Base Attributes
See Attributes.

Attributes affect many actions that you can perform and are raised by eating Foods that provide Food Event Points (FEPs).

Skills
See Skills.

Some skills affect active or passive qualities of your character, while others grant your character the ability to perform new actions, such as crafting new objects, performing new combat moves, or building new structures.

Personal Beliefs
See Personal Beliefs.

Your Personal Beliefs determine the values of your character and have various passive effects.

Worship
Requires the Ancestoral Worship skill.

Equipment
See Equipment Screen and List of Equipment.

HUD
The Heads Up Display (HUD) provides important information about your character's current status.
Health
Health is divided into three categories, indicated in the mouse-over as SHP/HHP/MHP.

SHP

Soft Hit Points. When this reaches 0, your character is knocked out, making it so you can temporarily do nothing. SHP recover over time (if you're not starving) up to the amount of HHP you have.

HHP

Hard Hit Points. When this reaches 0, your character dies. HHP can only be recovered either by using Gauze or Leeches.

MHP

Max Hit Points. Your HHP can never be greater than this number. It can only be increased by eating certain Foods that increase your Constitution attribute, or by increasing your Barbarism on the Barbarism/Civilization slider in the Personal Beliefs menu.

Stamina
Indicates how tired your character is. This goes down as you do various activities, eventually making your character move slower as it goes below certain levels. Over time, your stamina will recover by taking points from the hunger bar. It can also be recovered by drinking Tea&nbsp;and water with a water skin.

Hunger
This has five levels: Starving (0-49%), Very Hungry (50-79%), Hungry (80-89%), Full (90-100%), Overstuffed (&gt;100%), where the number represents the right most number in the mouse over. 10 units of hunger represent 1%, thus a food that recovers 40 units of hunger will increase the right most number by 4%. If you are at the Starving level, your character will slowly lose HHP. If you are at the Overstuffed level, you will only be able to move at a crawl. 1% of hunger can replace 5% of stamina.

Happiness
Does nothing except make you worry if you didn't read this. Now that you have, you know that it does nothing. Don't worry about it.

Speed
From slowest to fastest: Crawl, walk, run, sprint. Faster speeds consume more stamina.

Combat
See Combat Actions and Combat 101 for more details.
Melee Combat
Attack

Attacks are actions that inflict damage on your opponent. Using an attack will fully deplete the attack bar. The success rate of an attack depends heavily on how full the attack bar is when you attack, as well as the defense bar of your opponent. After attacking, you will return to using the Move you were using before attacking.

Maneuver

Maneuvers are patterns for responding to an attack. Your selected manuver determines how effective the attacks are on you, and have an effect every time the enemy uses a move.

Move

Moves are actions in combat that have some effect on the battle, generally raising or lowering your attack or defense. Once a move has been performed on an opponent, you will continue using that move as long as the conditions are met.

Special Move

Special Moves are actions that are performed once upon activation in order to gain some specific advantage in a fight by manipulating one or more of the fight variables.

Ranged Combat
Shoot

Ranged combat is limited to shooting with your weapons, there are no fancy tricks or anything complicated. Select 'Shoot' and left-click on your target. An aiming icon with a vertical bar will appear. How full the bar is determines your chance to hit. The speed that the bar fills up is based on your Marksmanship skill. See also, Archery.

Miscellaneous
Size
How many squares an object takes up. The first number refers to the x or horizontal direction, the second to the y or vertical direction. When talking about objects, size refers to how much inventory space it takes up, whereas when talking about structures it refers to the number of tiles it occupies.
Softcap
See Softcap.

A softcap refers to the effect that skills and attributes have on crafting items and building structures.
- I've deleted all 'City' pages I see as they are common source of griefing. It's irrevelent to game mechanics and there are not enough Admins/Moderators to come to a balanced decision on whether or not City pages should exist or not. Currently it's a pre-emptive strike against trolling as well as many City pages have been vandalized several times. If you feel this was done in haste and should be taken back perhaps you should speak with Darkren on the matter. -- DatOneGuy 20:17, May 30, 2010 (UTC)

Once found, it can be fed to a Mouflon or Auroch to attain Wool or Milk without having to tame the beast. To use, pick up a clover from your inventory and right-click it onto the animal.

To sheer a Mouflon, feed it a clover and then right click on it and select 'sheer'. Each clover gives you 1 wool.

To milk an Auroch, feed it a clover and then pick up a bucket and right-click in on the Auroch. Each clover gives you 2 litres of milk.
How to Acquire
Four-Leaf Clovers can be found on Grassland, Heath and Moor. Get your Perception * Exploration over 144 and you will start seeing some.

Quality
Soil quality of the area determines the quality of Four-leaf clovers and is softcapped by Survival.

The quality of the wool or milk obtained is equal to the quality of the clover used to feed the animal.<br />
Notes
You can feed an animal multiple clovers before sheering or milking it. This is most useful on Aurochs, since you can feed them 5 clovers and then milk them once to obtain 10 litres of milk, whereas with Mouflon you have to sheer them once for each wool.

History
The Druid's Cloak is a dev item. Two were made on the first map.

One was stolen from a dev, by a famous man known as JTG. JTG was a ruthless thief, and
had renown in the Hearthlands. JTG duplicated the cape, one of which was stolen by Laketown and seen worn by Rift on many occasions. JTG lost his other cape in a crash after an update. In the second map, 3 to 4 capes were given out to those with exceptionally high LP; it is known that Blaze, Rift and Pumpkin received them. Following the character/item wipe in the third map, no known cloaks exist, although it is possible that the developers gave them to a select few.

The cape give no skill or stat buffs, but makes a hearthling look like Link from the Legend of Zelda series.
A Ranger's Shirt fits under armor.
Stealth is all but useless given the way that detecting scents works. You are better off with a Vapntreyiu or even a Nettle Shirt.

Rudimental:

There are two ways to heal your hitpoints.
Gauze
Make a gauze and bandage your head. This will continously heal hitpoints. Gauze is seldom available to newer players as they need make it it from the fleece of a Mouflon. This works either by domesticating it into a sheep and shearing wool, or by feeding a wild one a four-leafed clover; the wild mouflon will allow you to shear it for 1 unit of wool afterwards. Gauze works slowly, but very surely, and with no risk up to 10 HHP per piece of gauze. You can only use one bandage at a time and cannot wear any headgear while your head is bandaged. Used gauze turns to bloody rags.
Leeches
Leeches heal your HHP (the middle number), but do damage to your SHP (the first number). They randomly attach to your equipment slots when walking through green swamps. This is the most available method for new players.
First you need to locate a swamp. This terrain shows greeny-blue on both the map and on the minimap. There is an almost identical terrain that shows greeny-blue on the map but white on the minimap and doesn't have leeches. It is a good idea to collect leeches and store them for future use if your dwelling is not conveniently close to a marsh.
When the leeches have attached to your equipment slots, they begin drinking your blood. This is what causes your soft SHP (the left number) to go down. A single leech takes about 10 SHP to bloat. If your SHP goes down to 0, your character will drop unconscious, AND you will then lose HHP! Thus you should start using leeches for healing when your SHP is maximal (i.e. equal to your HHP). SHP regenerate relatively fast, but cost hunger. Keep in mind that regenerating SHP has not been affected by the hunger-stamina fix.
You will not always get a HHP back for every time you lose a SHP to leeches, so you have to be patient. Don't overdo it by covering yourself with leeches all over. Bloated leeches stay on the character, so a K.O. shouldn't prove lethal, unless you were desperate and your HHP already in single digits.
Pick bloated leeches off and put them into your inventory, or a container, to save for another time. Replace them with unbloated leeches if available. Bloated leeches go back to being unbloated leeches after 8 real-time hours. Unbloated leeches do not starve. Leeches adjust quality by sucking your blood, defined by constitution value. High-quality leeches on average regain more HHP per use. Thus taking leeches previously used by high-con characters is beneficial to the player, but will decrease their quality.
Bloated and unbloated leeches can of course be used for bait.
Stats increases
This is not strictly a way to heal yourself, but for every attribute point of strength you gain one more hit point, and for every attribute point of constitution you gain two more hit points. This means that if you are down to 5/5/36 and raise your constitution, your hit points will become 7/7/38. After the last FEP update, bread has 0 FEP, rendering new character spam moot. Pike (Str and Con FEPs) is rare, too, as fishing spots on lake shallows became rare.

Лечение
Бинты (Gauze)
(Leeches)

It's dark, dammit! I can't see anything!

Just started the game and found yourself in a black terrain where a few isolated blueish campfires cast dim circles of light?

Haven and Hearth has both a night and day cycle and a lunar cycle. Sometimes there is a full moon and it is easy to operate at night. Sometimes there is a crescent moon or no moon at all and it is just about impossible without a light source. It will become light when the moon moves around counter clockwise to the horizon. The darkest part of the night lasts about three hours.

If you are a very new player you should have arrived with some torches. Transfer a torch from your inventory screen to your equipment screen by left clicking first on the torch, then on your character's hand. This is just like when you put your clothes on. The torch will appear both in the character's hand and in one of the boxes on the side of the equipment screen. Then right click on the box that the torch is in. An option "Light" should appear.

This will give you some light to explore with. As soon as you can find a tree and a make a fire. Collect five branches, then go into your adventure menu on the lower right and left click the picture of the red fire. Left click the ground in the spot you want to&nbsp;make the fire. Shift click on each of the branches to transfer them. Click build. This will result in a pile of wood just in front of your character, which you maybe can't even see if it is dark enough. Right click on the pile of wood until the "Light my fire" option comes up. Light!

Now you need to put your torch out to save it. Simply transfer it back to your inventory and it will go out. You can still hold it in your hand to gain the inventory space.

Newbies will find it convenient to have several fires. Making fires is good beginner lp, and that way when they start to go out you will still have some light to find the tree and make some more of them. You can also build a torchpost to put your torches in so that you can have light and keep your hands empty.

If you have access to experienced player resources, such as if you have joined a town with a mine there are two other sources of light, both based on candles. Miners often wear mining helmets with a candle so that they can see to work and still have the two hands they need to hold their pick, and candelabras can be made of metal to hold the candles the way the torchpost holds torches.

It is still perfectly possible to see in a mine by building a chain of campfires, if you do not have torches or candles.

For those who have a flat screen monitor, you will find moving the gaming window as far down as possible and looking at the screen from slightly above makes it easier to see when it is dark.

For those who don't want to experience the night and day cycle or stumble around in the dark you can download Pacho's client and use that instead of the default client. Pacho's client has a setting where you can remove the colour filters altogether that create the darkness so that wherever you character is, is permanent day light. There is a link to Pacho's client in the forum.

If you are a new player and being attacked by animals there are a few things you can do to survive.

If there is water nearby run for it and wade into it as deep as you can. The animal should not be able to hit you when you are at the deepest wading point. Do not try to swim away as you are guaranteed to drown instantly. You can then wade up or down stream to get further away from the animal. Keep going until the picture of the animal turns into a question mark and disappears.

If you had to leave something behind when the animal attacked you and you are desperate to get it back, wade a short distance away, come out of the water long enough to get the animal to chase you and then pop back in again. Do this until the animal is two or three screens away from the thing you want to retrieve. Then you can sneak past it in the water back to your starting point and try to get the thing you left behind.

You can run into a house and wait until the animal drops the aggro before you come out. However it is quite likely the animal will still be on the doorstep.

You cannot log out while an animal is aggro'd on you.

You can log out after the animal has knocked you unconscious and it is no longer aggro'd on you. You will know that the aggro has ceased when the picture of the animal in the top right corner disappears. You are unconscious while the little x's circle around your lying down character's head.

If an animal is camping your body, that is waiting until you become conscious again and then attacking once more, you can try waiting until the first instant that you become conscious and then running like hell.

You may wish to return to your hearth fire, if you have been exploring and found yourself in territory where the animals are aggressive. Again you can't do this while the animal is aggro'd on you but you can do it while unconscious. Use the Travel menu under Adventure to do this. You can always travel to your hearth fire no matter how high your travel weariness is.

The presence of towns and hearth fires lowers the level of the surrounding animals. Level I and II animals will never attack but will fight back. Beside a town the animals only generate as level I or II but of course you can still lead a higher level animal back to the the town. Staying really close to a town can keep you from being attacked.

You can build an enclosure to be safe in. This can be built of permanent materials, such as a fence or a row of completed baskets, or of incompleted materials, such as a row of fires that have not been built and are represented by little signposts.

You may need to reset your defense if you are being ko'd by animals frequently. "Death or Glory" for example is a suicide defense, and if it was the last one you used you will take a lot of damage every time you are attacked afterwards. To reset your default defense merely click on "Combat maneouvers" and then select "Dodge". If you have been carrying a shield and put it down remember to reset your defense from "Shield" to "Dodge".
Legacy:Find food!

Rudimental:

IMPORTANT:
Your character needs to eat in order to survive. It is easy for a new player to starve to death if their stamina is low and if they get wounded. If you want your character to stay alive keep him/her well fed until you learn how quickly stamina and healing drain your hunger bar.

Your attributes are based on the food you eat. You gain strength, charisma, dexterity and your other skills from your choice of food. This means that if you rely on only one or two foods your attributes will get out of balance. If you eat only chanterelles and blueberries you will get high dexterity and high intelligence but all your other stats will lag. You need to eat fep equal to the number of your highest attribute to gain in any attribute. So if your dexterity is 20 and you need to gain strength because it is still only 10, you will have to eat 20 fep to go up to an 11 in strength. If your attributes get badly out of balance it is extremely hard to raise the trailing stats.

You will probably eat a variety of different foods so your fep bar will show several different colours. If your fep bar shows 2 fep of strength, 4 fep of psyche, 3 fep of dex and 1 fep of charisma and you need to eat 10 fep to gain any attribute you have a 20% chance of gaining strength, a 40% chance of gaining psyche and so on, proportionate to what you have eaten.
Every new player can do this:
Look for Apple, Hazelnut, or a Mulberry trees, found in broad-leaf forests. If you find one, right-click it to pick a fruit, which will then appear in your inventory. You must have at least one empty tile in your inventory to do this.

Then right click on the fruit for the option to eat it. If you eat an apple, you will have to drop the apple core to empty space in your inventory (or on the ground). Each tree only produces a certain amount of fruit at a time, and fruit doesn't help increase your attributes, so try not to rely on them for too long. Once you decide to venture outwards, though, make sure to have some surplus food in your inventory.

Keep in mind that forest areas spawn boars and bears, which tend to attack humans on sight and are very dangerous.

You also might be able to scavenge fox kills. Foxes kill rabbits. The most common place to find a dead rabbit is at the edge of the water, where rabbits often become trapped. Foxes also kill chickens. Chickens are found in grasslands, moors and heaths. When a fox attacks them, they scatter; so if you see chickens running around, there is a good chance a fox has been hunting them, and you might be able to find one or more dead. Fox-killed rabbits and chickens are just the same as ones that you kill yourself, except that you don't need to have the hunting skill to make use of them.

If you get the foraging skill:
Raid Ant Hills. You can only do this without being attacked by the ants if you do not have the hunting skill. Just right-click on the red mound near ant swarms. The option "Raid" will pop up. All items found when you raid an ants' nest are food. Not all ant hills will have food in them, but they will all give you LP, at least. Sometimes, an ant hill will have several food items in it.

(If you already have the hunting skill, you can try to flee from the ants or learn The Will to Power and some form of combat to try and fight them. They cannot currently kill players, so they aren't too dangerous and can be good for combat practice.)

Look for Chantrelles. These are pale orange speckles found in forests on the ground. Look for Spindly Taproots, although eating them might be a waste. These are dark brown roots that grow in forests on the ground. Right click them to pick them. Look for blueberries. These are plants that grown in forest or on heath or moor. (Higher exploration and perception&nbsp;enable you to find more.)

If you have the hunting skill:
Look for rabbits. You need at least four empty tiles in your inventory in a 2x2 square. Get as close as you can to a rabbit. Wait until it stops moving and stand exactly beside it, but so that the rabbit is still visible to click on. Right click on the rabbit.

If it runs away and you missed it, immediately click the round button with crossed swords beside the picture of the rabbit that pops up in the top right corner. This will stop the aggression between you and the rabbit, and it will soon stop running away, giving you a chance to find it and try again.

You will need to right-click on the rabbit in inventory to wring its neck, and then right-click again to butcher it.

In some terrains, you can try to find chickens, too. They are caught and killed the same way as rabbits, but are easier to catch.

Try to avoid eating any meat raw, as you get sickness FEP, which can cost you hit points. As long as you can find branches to make a fire, you can cook meat from the Craft menu.

If you have a sling:
You can attack and try to kill larger game, such as foxes and deer. They will not attack you until you attack them first, so you can fence them in to make it easier and shoot at them safely from outside the enclosure. Hunting enclosures are usually made out of fires. Just put one branch in, and then move on to make the next fire. It will make a row of little signposts that the animal cannot escape. A good place to enclose an animal is just at the edge of water. They often stop there, and it takes fewer fires to enclose them. Foxes are the easiest to kill, followed by boar, although boar will attack you. You may want to hunt boar from a boat or after enclosing yourself next to a boulder. Deer will not attack you unless you attack them so they are easy to trap. However, deer will heal animals that you are fighting; if you try to kill one of a herd of deer, the other deer will keep healing it, making it harder to kill.

Aurochsen and mouflon are not good quarry to practice on, as they mob you if you attack one of them. You will need to enclose the entire herd, with your target animal enclosed separately from the others, to remain safely out of their reach.

By using a boat, you can safely attack any animal as long as you keep just out of range. This is one of the better ways to hunt aurochsen and mouflon.

If you have the farming skill:
Sometimes you can find Wild Windsown Weed which can be dried to different seeds. Carrot seeds can be planted for Carrot that can be eaten (or planted again) raw. Grapes can be eaten raw too but you will not be able to replant the seeds until you have the winemaking skill.

If you have the fishing skill:
Fishing is not a very good first option. In addition to the Fishing Pole every new player receives, you will need to have fishing line (string), hooks, and bait or lures. Hooks require bones, which usually require hunting or scavenging animals. Spindly Taproot and other plants function as string, so foraging is required. If you have carpentry, you can make a woodfish lure from a wood block (made out of a tree stump or log). If you have Stone Working, you can make a rock lobster lure from a stone you chip off a boulder. Unless you can make a lure or find leeches, you will need to dig in the dirt to get earthworms for bait; this uses a lot of stamina, and thus may make you hungrier than whatever fish you catch.

Fishing is done in waters where fish can be seen. If you don't see fish jumping out of the water every few seconds, there are no fish there.

While fishing is not the easiest option for a single player, it is probably the best starting skill for a group of players located close to a lake or a river. Dividing the necessary tasks (1 hunter, 1 forager, 1 stoneworker, 1 lumberjack-carpenter) allows for the steadiest income of food possible without relying on luck to find prey or edible plants.

You spawn as a little blue orb, first you should go to the chest and either equip the items, or place them all in your inventory. Next go to both of the people near the water.

One will have you select your name, the other will select your gender, if you right click the person on the left (Gender chooser) twice, you will become female, you can keep clicking that person as many times as you would like.

After you have chosen your gender and name, you may, right click either the trapdoor, the ladder, or the person with the globe in the top corner of the room.

*The person on the top will allow you to spawn at someone's Hearth Fire, to do so the person you choose to spawn at must have set a Hearth Secret, and tell you it. If you right click this person, you will be presented a text box, enter the person's Hearth Secret, and press enter and a stairwell will appear. Right click the stairwell and you will spawn there.

Hope you enjoy my little tutorial, I left the old way to get out for educational purposes.

This page is obsolete on the new map (World 3, spring 2010). 'World 2 had a central spawning point called Ring of Brodgar.

All new characters would spawn at this place, and it thus tended to be a treeless wasteland.

Just started the game and found yourself in a strange devastated area, with claims everywhere and no resources?

The nearer you are to the main starting points, the fewer resources and the more claims you will find. This is because the starting points see the hardest usage. To find trees, wilderness and other resources you need to move out.

At the moment the main starting point is the Ring of Brodgar, a Stonehenge like ring of stones. There are a couple of ways you can travel. Wandering around randomly will probably make you think you are in a horrible maze, and ultimately lead to starving to death or quitting.

If there is a square up on the top left of your computer screen labeled "Baby Blue Eyes" this means you can click on the charter stone in the middle of the Ring of Brodgar and teleport to some other charter stone.

This will only work until you have actually interacted with something at your starting point, so if you want to travel out this way you have to do it first thing.

If you see someone in the City of Brodgar you can ask them for directions.

The City of Brodgar is meant to help new players. Anyone you meet will probably be willing to give you some advice and show you the roads. Of course they may not speak English. There are a lot of international players.

You can also teleport using crossroads.

To find the nearest crossroads at Brodgar you need to start by finding the city idol. If you go to the idol you will find very near it a row of posts with crossroad signs on it and by right click the post you can choose a destination to travel to. There is a very linear route to get to the idol. If you head just a short distance diagonally up and left you will be traveling due west on the minimap. As soon as you reach the corner of a pallisade (tree-trunk wall) turn north. In a short distance there will be a house with a yellow thatched roof on your right, and a gate into another part of the pallisade. This will lead you through a narrow path until you reach a large paved area where the idol stands with blazing eyes. Look down at the lower left of your screen at the minimap as you walk north. There is a white skullface on red which represents the town idol of the City of Brodgar. The crossroads are just to the left of the idol.

To teleport from a crossroads you need to have enough agility. You start with agility 10. If the locations listed says that the travel weariness is higher than 100% it means that you can't make the teleportation jump. You will be able to make bigger jumps when you have higher agility.

Currently Radstock and SwampCrazed Water are two locations you could jump to that will take you to level 1 animals (not ferocious) and some trees including apple and mulberry trees for food. This will probably change. If you go to SwampCrazed Water you will have to wade to get around the corners of the town wall, but can follow the bank to get out to an open area that is easy to explore.

Lake Russaria is another location within teleporting distance for a new player.&nbsp;However as it is located in a fir forest there are no immediate fruit trees to rely on and the animals are level 3 and will attack your character, survival is just a bit more difficult.

(If anyone would like to edit and place a list of further suggested locations to jump to that take less than 100% travel fatigue, please do it here.)

Supposing you don't want to teleport since until you have a bed you can't sleep off travel weariness, or you went somewhere and it was a bad idea, so you came back and don't have the ability to teleport again? And there seems to be nobody around. You can actually walk out of Brodgar.

HOW&nbsp;TO&nbsp;WALK&nbsp;OUT&nbsp;OF&nbsp;BRODGAR

Begin at the idol - there are instructions to get from the ring of stones to the idol a little way above - Turn to your right and look for an open pallisade gate a little to the south-west of the idol. Go through this and walk west. Whenever you can walk west and north. This will bring you eventually to a clear cut area where a few animals wander through a barren landscape and there are not enough claims to entrap you. You still need to walk until you find plenty of trees including mulberry and apple trees for food however. You don't want to stop forever at the very first tree you find although if food is not a problem you might want to stop for twenty minutes or half an hour to build fires and earn your first lp, especially if it is dark.

Because the south, north and west of RoB is surrounded by rivers you can't cross until you find enough trees to build a boat you will need to keep going east. If you keep the water on your right and just keep trekking along you will find lots of trees and eventually wind your way down towards the south part of the world.&nbsp; If you bear north-east you will find yourself able to turn north and get to the top of the map. You can also keep going due east.

Lands to the East are under the protection of Xanadu. Peaceable settlers may want to go in this direction.

Rudimental: Adding categories

Essentially the combat system is set up so that with a little bit of cleverness you can defeat the AI that is a higher level than you'd expect, and I'd imagine against other players have quite few nasty different tricks that can all be countered or messed with.

Energy
To start with there are quite a few types of "energy" for you to play with. Each with their own advantages, and disadvantages if you decide to focus on something else.

The first one is "the scale". Symbol: a scale
<br />
Essentially the purpose it serves is to determine how much attack/defense you get. If the scale is down on the left side it's in your favor and you get more energy than the opponent .

The next one is Battle Intensity. Symbol: a circle of fire
<br />
Basically you earn this as the battle goes on. The purpose is to essentially be an "ace" card and is tied to some very powerful abilities that reset this form of energy or require it to be above a certain level. Battle Intensity also have a secondary effect making attacks/manuavers activating faster.

The third one underneath is Attack. Symbol: crossed swords
<br />
This basically represents how accurate your next Move will be, and maybe how much damage it does. Slowly regenerates

Followed by Defense. Symbol: a shield
<br />
This is what takes damage before your "real" health takes damage, if you can keep your Defense to an adequate level you will NEVER EVER take HP damage from your enemy. Slowly regenerates

The last form of energy is Initiative. Symbol: a coin or several coints
<br />
This is basically a type of energy some abilities generate and other use as a cost.

There is still your normal Health.
It has 3 levels How much damage it can take before you're knocked out/How much damage you can take before you die/Max health. When you actually take damage you'll lose damage from the first level and a tiny bit from the second level. The first level heals somewhat quickly, the second level heals only with treatment.

Abilities
There are various types of abilities.

Attacks: These actually do damage to the target, actually use up the Attack bar.<br />
Maneuvers: this is how you respond to a move
<br />
Moves: this does NOT do damage, but does affect energy levels. A move will contiguously repeat itself and when it "hits" the effect takes place. You should always have a move up and running. If you no longer fulfill the requirements for a move it cancels itself.

Special Attacks: These are attacks that do various things, in some cases to the enemy in other cases to yourself. they do NOT use up the Attack bar.

Ability Descriptions
Inside the combat menu there are all the abilities you currently have unlocked separated into each category . To read the effects are initially confusing, but there is logic to the insanity.

Name (always here)
<br />
Other Requirements(sometimes there)
<br />
Weight: Symbol (always here, tells you if your body matters(fist) or the item related to it does(sword) )<br />

Description: what the skill does typically using the symbols for each type of energy. Sometimes with a bit more for some abilities.

To read the description It's a matter of looking at the symbol and then seeing if it's + or -. If it's a + sign it'll increase that form of energy, if it's a - sign it'll decrease it. Moves are slightly different in that their cost is listed above the weight.

For instance

Charge
<br />
weight: fist
<br />
Cross Swords: +3 Shield: -8 Coin +1

means that each time this Move actually hits your Attack energy will increase by 3, your defense will decrease by 8, and your initiative will increase by 1.

There is also another notation which tells you that it affects the enemy rather than yourself, which uses the '/' sign.

Shield: 0/-20

means that your opponent would lose 20 defense.

The last "strange" notation is in the additional requirments area.

Flex
Initiative: 0+6
<br />
weight fist
<br />
attack: +20

Basically means that it will cost you 0 initiative to use but that you must have 6 or more. It's worth noting that there are '>' and '<' signs for additional requirements as well.

Examples
Weak target:

Start by using "Jump" as your move. then use punch when the attack bar is mostly full.

stronger target:

Start with dash as your move. and just wait for the your initiative to come in, use it as often as with side step. then you can focus on using attacks as well after you placed yourself at the advantage. This obviously won't work very well against a human.

It's also worth noting that you can change your move at anytime, for instance using jump or flex.

Fun combos:

Opportunity Knocks is a special move that lowers defense(as a special move it doesn't use up the attack bar) so you could potentially choose to just wait for initiative to pile in in a large way, then use the special attack 3 to 5 times in a row to completely remove your targets defense. Which means you get nice open hits at the "real" health bar.

Using sting like a bee with 10 battle intensity also essentially lets you get 2 attacks one after the other. I've been using it on animals that run to a really nice effect.

Combining these two with dash essentially means that you have a slow way to take out most things that you would have taken out previously, and safer as your real health will probably never be touched.

Rudimental: Adding categories

If you are new to Haven &amp; Hearth, it is recommended that you read the Quick How-To, followed by the unofficial manual.

Leveling Up
In Haven and Hearth, you don't so much 'level up' via XP so much as you earn Learning Points (LPs) and spend them on skills.
Earning LP
A few good ways of accumulating LPs early on are:
* gather branches from a tree and ctrl+click on them in your inventory to drop them as you collect them. As of July 15, 2009, you can only gain LP from branches until your character has accumulated a total of 1000 LPs.
** Note: you can get branches from trees - so you must find some first. Look around the area where you start. Fir trees hold seven branches and they can take a while to regenerate once used. If you find that trees have less than seven branches - two or three, for example - this is a good indicator that you have neighbours nearby. Other kind of trees can have more or less than 7 branches by default.

* Make Kuksa with a birch tree.

* build a lot of fires and light them
* crafting stone axes
* building Tanning Tub
* crafting tea pots (need pottery skill).
* Digging for Clay

A few BAD ways of accumulating LPs early on are:
* Building a metric ass ton of wicker baskets (not as bad now that decay is implemented).
* Waging a crusade against any tree in sight
* Converting stone boulders into rune stones or querns.
* Building things only part of the way with no intention of finishing them

These bad ways will quickly cause a horrible mess, or drain all the good resources out of the new player area, and typically won't get you LPs any faster than the more socially acceptable ways.

Personally I thoroughly recommend picking up the fishing skill as your first skill and catching as many fish as you can. You'll get LP and you can trade the fish with more established players for all sorts of things like backpacks, coins, weapons, and leather armor. You can also eat the fish if you are in dire need of food near the beginning. Note: New players begin with a fishing pole but need to obtain string for a fishing line, a hook and some kind of lure or bait before they can use the pole. If you do not have a way of getting those materials you may want to leave fishing until a little later.

Using LP
The little button of a face down the bottom center of your screen will open up your character sheet. You can see how many LPs you currently have here.
The middle tab on the character sheet (button of a book) will open up your skill list.
There is a description panel, a list of available skills, and a list of possessed skills.

You won't be able to buy any of the skills until you've accumulated enough LP's. They will appear in red until you have enough LPs.
If you want a skill that isn't in your available skills list, consult the tree on the skills page to figure out which skills you need to earn first.

One of the negatives of fishing for all of your food when you begin is that your intelligence will increase.&nbsp; This will make it difficult to level up other skills when you want to. I would recommend finding an unclaimed fruit tree and work near it so base abilities don't increase.

Increasing Stats
Your statistics (STR, AGI, etc.) are increased by eating various foods. Each food provides a number of Food Event Points (FEPs) towards various stats, detailed in the table below. To increase a stat, you must accumulate a number of FEPs equal to your highest stat (ignoring modifiers). By placing the cursor over the bar below the statistics on the character sheet, you can see a tooltip showing how many FEPs you currently have and how many you need. The stat that is increased is probabilistically determined by how many FEPs you have towards each stat. For example, if you only eat bear salami, then upon accumulating enough FEPs to increase a stat, you will have a 57.14% chance of strength increasing by one, and a 42.86% chance of charisma increasing by one. After a stat is increased, your current FEPs are reset to zero, so any overflow is lost (though it still affects the determination of which stat increases before the current FEPs are reset).

Food Event Points (FEP)
Your Attributes (Stength, Agility, etc.) are increased by eating various foods. Most food provides a number of Food Event Points (FEPs) towards various attributes, detailed in the FEP Table.

By placing the cursor over the bar below the statistics on the character sheet, you can see a Bar showing how many FEPs you currently have, in total and by attribute, and how many you need. To increase a stat, you must initially accumulate a number of FEPs equal to your highest attribute (ignoring modifiers). Accumulating FEPs that contribute to different attributes, however, will lower the total number required. E.G. If you eat food that provides only Strength FEPs you will need X total FEPs to increase an attribute, but if you then eat food that provdes Dexterity FEPs, you will need <X FEPs. This only applies the first time you eat a food that contains FEPs for an attribute not in the bar.

Which attribute is increased is probabilistically determined by how many FEPs you have towards each attribute. For example, if you only eat Bear Salami, then upon accumulating enough FEPs to increase a stat, you will have a 57.14% chance of Strength increasing by one, and a 42.86% chance of Charisma increasing by one. After an attribute is increased, your current FEPs are reset to zero, so any overflow is lost (though it still affects the determination of which attribute increases before the current FEPs are reset).

Example:

Joe has 15 in all attributes. So he needs 15 FEPs to get his next attribute increase. He eats food that gives him 15 Strength FEPs, and his Strength goes up by one.

Joe now has 16 STR, so he'll need 16 FEPs for his next attribute increase. He eats some more food and gains 3 FEPs in each of Charisma, Dexterity, and Intelligence. His FEP bar is reduced to 12 FEPs required (just an example, not the real value it would be reduced to), with 3 Dexterity, 3 Charisma, 3 Intelligence FEPs. He then eats food that gives him 3 more Intelligence FEPs. This gives Joe a 50% (6 out of 12) chance of Intelligence being the attribute increased, and a 25% (3 out of 12) chance that either Charisma or Dexterity will be increased.

Joe's highest attribute is 16, so he still only needs 16 FEPs for his next attribute increase. This is important, as it means Joe can gain attributes faster if he avoids raising his highest attribute.

See the Survivalist's Quick-Reference for a list of FEP foods available to those without access to higher tech things, such as a Meat Grinder.

Notes
As per the example, since increasing FEPs is based on your highest attribute, increasing your highest attribute is not recommended, since it will affect how many FEPs you require to raise every other attribute.
