<i><b>Note</b>: Farming is not only a basic skill but also an [[Abilities#Farming|incrementable ability]].</i>

== Agriculture ==

The Farming skill allows a Hearthling to plant seeds in soil to grow crops for food or materials. There are 20 crops in the game, 15 of which are planted directly into soil and 5 of which must be planted on a [[Trellis]]. To plant crops, you need 5 seeds per tile, (One full stack of 50 seeds will plant 10 crops), tilled ground, and patience. Note that certain crops are planted with the crop itself and not seeds, for instance, [[Beetroot]]s and [[Pea]]s do not have seeds, you simply plant the item themselves. Check the table below for more info.

* First, till some ground. You can do this on most dirt terrains by hand, but building a plow is preferable. A wooden plow lets you simply walk along at Crawl speed (1.5 tiles per second) to till the ground, a [[Metal Plow]] lets you do so at Run speed (4.5 tiles per second).

* Now, left click a stack of at least 5 seeds, and right click a tile of tilled ground. You can do this faster by holding shift and then right clicking the tile, which keeps the stack attached to your cursor, or at maximum speed by simply shift + right clicking the seeds in your inventory, which will then let you drag and drop a zone over a square of tiles which your character will automatically walk to and plant until they're done or they run out of seeds.

* Now comes the waiting. Plants take varying times to grow. [[Carrot]]s will grow in a day, [[Pumpkin]]s will grow in a week, with other crops somewhere in between.

* You will know a crop is fully grown when you can right click it and click harvest. Your character will walk over and pick the crop, giving you its materials and/or seeds. A [[Scythe]] will harvest multiple crops in front of you at a time. You can shift + right click a fully grown crop to drag and drop a zone over other fully grown crops of the same type to quickly and automatically harvest them as well, just like planting.

This won't work for all crops however. Specifically, [[Pea]]s, [[Peppercorn]]s, [[Grapes]], [[Cucumber]]s and [[Hop Cones|Hops]] crops are vineyard plants and are too delicate to be grown on their own and require a [[Trellis]]. This is quite simple though, simply build a trellis and right click the seeds onto the trellis like it were a tilled tile. Trellis plants generally take longer to grow than others.

Some things to note:

'''Seeds too annoying to carry and store? Worry not, they can be put into [[Bucket]]s, [[Barrel]]s, and [[Granary|Granaries]]!'''

For buckets, you must have the bucket in a container or your hands, they can't be filled when in your inventory. Simply right click the seeds onto the bucket. Each bucket can hold 1000 seeds, allowing you to carry a total 2000 seeds on you without any inventory space being used!

For barrels, simply right click the seeds straight into the barrel. Each barrel can hold 10,000 seeds.

Granaries are far more difficult to make than the other two choices, but are maximally efficient! They have 10 slots, to distribute the grand total capacity of 200,000 seeds(''units''). Simply right click the seeds into a slot. Granaries can hold other things like flours, grists, ash, and such as well.

'''Farming not rewarding enough?'''

Invest some Learning Points into [[Gardening]], [[Plant Lore]] or even the ultimate [[Druidic Rite]]! Each skill makes you gain extra seeds and products when harvesting.

And if you're a true connoisseur of the farming arts, consider attempting the Farmer's Credo, which grants you further benefits to your ''growing'' (pun intended) arsenal. See more in [[Credo]].

'''''How do I even get seeds?!'''''

Aside from asking or [[Theft|borrowing]] them from a neighbour or friend, you can get random seeds from drying [[Wild Windsown Weed]]s on a [[Drying Frame]] or [[Herbalist Table]].

'''How do I farm things like Blueberries?'''

That is another form of farming called [[Gardening]]. It is similar to Farming but you need to get that skill and then make yourself some [[Garden Pot]]s and fill them with soil and water, then you right click your forageable of choice like Blueberries and right click them into the pot.

'''The winter snow killed my crops! How can I farm in winter and early spring while snow is still around?'''

Crops die when winter hits and they're unprotected.

In early spring, digging will get rid of the snow. Be careful - you want the snow gone, not a deep pit in your plowed field.

In winter, you can build fires around to melt the snow and save your crops from the low temperatures.

If constantly relighting fires isn't your thing you can use [[Mulch]] you get from your [[Compost Bin]] to make a [[Mound Bed]], which radiates the summer warmth around it indefinitely in a sizeable area, and you can also plant forageables in it.

== Quality of seeds ==

The quality of planted crops is based upon the quality of the planted seed with a '''[-2,&nbsp;+5]''' random range limited by space, time, and the farmer's [[Abilities#Farming|farming ability]] level.

Exception: If you are above your local quality cap, <b>and</b> if you are the server lead in crop quality for that crop type, your crops will instead change by '''[-2,&nbsp;+2]''' with each generation. The local quality cap effectively only matters for the server lead. (''ref: ... and {{Patch|Yesteryear's Patch}}'')==(''no fixed crop quality limit anymore'')

If your farming ability(''ie: quality level'') is below the seed/crop quality than all positives are effectively floored to zero. ie: '''[-2,-1,+0''(x6)'']'''.

Each batch of a crop which is planted in the same area (~2 minimaps), time (~2 hours), and of the same type (''carrots, peas, barley, etc''), will be given the same random quality modification uniformly, and planted tiles of that batch will thus all have their quality affected in the same way.

Harvesting does seem to be affected by the farming skill. However, it is affected by skills that add additional seeds - [[Gardening]], [[Plant Lore]] and [[Druidic Rite]]; you will not get additional seeds if the harvesting character lacks these skills.

Crop byproducts, like [[Straw]] or [[Finer Plant Fibre]], are '''not''' affected by the random quality modifier and will be the same quality as the planted crop/seed.

== Quality Grinding ==

To maximize quality gain, it is advisable to use multiple plantings, at least 2 hours apart, of your highest seed quality. With maximum skills, plants will yield three times their number in plantings-worth of seed. By planting in three phases it give you three chances to score the maximum +5 quality gain. Whatever the results, the highest quality seed will be sufficient to repeat the planting. If expanding the crops is a priority, two plantings leaves enough seed to expand each planting by 50%. This method avoids the downside of a bad RNG result unless all three plantings roll poorly (which is unlikely). Therefore, doing this will consistently increase average seed quality, and thus product quality, over time. The excess seeds or crops can then be used to crafting and consumption.

If you are fortunate to have seeds of a higher quality than your skills would otherwise produce (i.e. from a neighbour), then the resulting planting quality will not be between -2 and +5, but all positives are set to 0, giving a good chance to maintain the high quality while building up your skills to match.

== What it does ==

Farming lets you plant and harvest crops (except [[Grape Seeds|grape seeds]], which need [[Winemaking]]), plant [[Tree|trees]], [[Wooden Plow|plow]] fields, mill [[Flour]], and craft [[Straw Hat]]s. You need at least 5 of the same seed to plant.

:{{GM|$Adventure|La$ndscaping|Hand $Plow}}
:*Plows squares of furrowed soil that can be used to plant crops. Furrowed soil is not needed to plant trees, however. Plowing by hand uses more stamina than using the Plow item.

:{{GM|$Build|$Containers}}
:*[[Straw Basket]]

:{{GM|$Craft|$Clothes & Equipment|$Hats & Headwear}}
:*[[Straw Hat]]

:{{GM|$Craft|$Processing & Materials}}
:*Grind [[Barley Flour|Flour]]

==Seed Stacking==

As of World 8, seeds of the same crop can stack (up to 50 in the inventory, 1000 in a bucket and 10000 in a barrel) if they have the same qualities. If you mix seeds with different qualities together, using a bucket or barrel, the resulting quality is:

<math>
qStack = \left ( \frac{qSeed1 + qSeed2 + qSeed3 + ... + qSeedn}{n} \right )
</math>

You can use this to raise the overall quality of your seeds of a given crop by sacrificing higher tier seeds.
{{GM|$Build|$Buildings & Construction|Walls & Fen$ces|$Palisade}}

A sturdy wall, indestructible without the aid of a [[Siegecraft|Siege Engine]] or a [[Wrecking Ball]] when fully dried and covered by an <strike>active</strike> [[claim]]. Can be repaired for 250 health every two hours.

Constructing a [//www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=72166|a properly built wall] should be of immediate, if not ''the first'', concern of someone staking a new [[claim]].

==How to Acquire==

Begin by constructing a cornerpost. Right click on the cornerpost to extend the wall. Use "Prepare for gate" to place another cornerpost 2 tiles away in any direction, when the second post is finished, a gate can be built between them. Be sure to build your gate falling '''outward''', as if it's going over a moat around your wall, this is important for [[Metal Lock|locking]].

(WIP) Regular and visitor gate work differently! If you have no idea what the difference is, only build visitor gates!

A freshly built palisade's soak will increase slowly from zero to full over the course of three days. This means that it can be broken with a starting character with only 10 Strength. After 24 hours they require higher strength or a [[ram]] to break.

==Sealing==

A cornerpost has the option of being sealed after being built. This prevents any additional extensions from being built off that post. '''Warning: sealing a cornerpost is permanent. Sealing used to be highly recommended, but building walls without claim permissions has been disallowed. (You can't do it even as a crime.) Same applies to sealing itself.

==Cascade damage==

When a palisade segment is destroyed, it has a chance to take adjoining segments down with it. This chance is rolled again for the adjoining segment, which can break another adjoining segment. Ultimately this results in a damage cascade, whereby destroying one segment usually results in a large number of destroyed segments, sometimes even up to 20.

When a cascade destroys a cornerpost that branches off into different directions, multiple cascades will occur, continuing in each direction.

Cascade damage can only happen between segments with the same soak.

==Gates==
Gates can '''not''' be [[Metal_Lock#Lockpicking|lockpicked]], regardless of type and quality of the lock. Any quality wooden lock will secure your base just fine.

Palisade and [[Brickwall|Brick Wall]] give players two options when building gates, a normal gate or a visitor gate.

Normal gate, when opened, allow any players to pass through normally with no exceptions.

Visitor gate however, will apply a [[Village Claim#visitor buff|Visitor buff]] to any players (except the owner) who pass through it. The Visitor buff prevents a player from committing any [[Criminal Acts]], including initiating or engaging in combat, even if the criminal acts are toggled on. Thus, these gates are ideal for letting in strangers or players that you do not fully trust for making a trade or a tour of your base, or to provide a peaceful public area within your claim for a market or inn. Visitor gates are marked with two red flags as shown below.
*WARNING: Visitor gates prevent anyone in combat from passing through it (both PvP and PvE combat), even the owner (Animals excluded!). It is recommended to have both normal and visitor gates on your claim, even if you intend to utilize visitor gates on most parts of your base, so that you can pass through your walls safely (via normal gates) when being chased by animals or other players while still in combat.
*Note: there is no way to remove the visitor buff while inside the claim, it can only be removed by exiting the claim.
*The direction of visitor gates does not matter. They apply the buff no matter which direction you pass through it.
*WARNING: The claim priority matters! If person got visitor debuff for village, it can commit crimes on private claims inside the village if it not cover the gates. (ref: {{HFL|p=869342|title=Gates questions|date=04 Dec 2020}})
*You could be shot throught any open gates (both visitor and normal).
*WARNING: Visitor buff does not prevent looting from knocked out characters. This issue might also extend towards all objects that have their own built-in claims, such as [[Hearth Fire|hearth fires]], [[Leanto|leantos]] and [[Tent|tents]]. [//www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=869342#p869342]

[[File:Gates_Example.png ]]
A Normal Gate next to a Visitor Gate.

==Notes==
*For couple of reasons related to security and griefing, you should extend the claim at least one tile beyond the wall.

*Palisade sections allow for a terrain height difference of +/-5.

*An unprotected Palisade (no active claims) can be damaged by hand. This was a change with the "Bog Turtle Boogaloo" update dated 18 April, 2019.

*You can't build walls within 6 tiles of water. You also cannot build walls on a claim you have no rights to (not even with Criminal Acts).

*If a copy of your Master Key gets stolen, but you have a spare, you can install a new lock with the old Master Key in your inventory.

*You can right click your Master Key onto a new lock in your inventory to make them match. This is useful if you have multiple walls, or if you're using an 'airlock' as outlined below.

*A gate can be made more secure by building an airlock system. Going through one gate and closing it before opening the other makes sure someone can't rush in while you're going outside.

*When trying to extend a wall onto forest terrain, you can get an error message saying you can't build there. You can remedy this by plowing, then either paving or stomping to dirt.

*Extreme caution should be used when building palisades near cliffs as areas that appear usable, and may even allow the laying of stone or brick, may NOT allow the placement of a palisade.

*You can continue building from a palisade segment that is connected to a sealed cornerpost and this means that you can seal a cornerpost immediately after building the segments in the directions you want to build to. You can also build a gate to a sealed cornerpost if the adjacent cornerpost is not sealed.

*A palisade will keep you almost as safe as a [[Brickwall]] as long as you keep an active claim over the palisade and check regularly for siege engines and battering rams. Brickwalls only stand up longer to bashing and require characters with a higher total strength to operate the ram, but that won't make much of a difference.

*For practice, one may try building a small [[Roundpole Fence]]. The game mechanics for building the [[Roundpole Fence|fence]], Palisade, and [[Brickwall]] are identical. If you make a mistake with the fence, it's easy to see where you goofed up and correct. The only thing that is not the same is the building being blocked by water, fences can be built closer to water than Palisades or Brick walls.

*Wagons fit through two tile wide gates, though it can be a bit hard to position them correctly. It is suggested to build a three tile wide gate if you plan on using a wagon.

*It's possible to build 3 tile wide gates. To do this you need to choose the option "Prepare for gate" and move the mouse to the 4th tile from the cornerpost.
[[File:ThreeTilesGates.jpg]]

*You will need at least 121 strength to damage it with a battering ram solo. Two characters with around 36 strength each is enough to do damage with a battering ram. Other tools, such as a pickaxe, do not help while using a battering ram, according to loftar. (Verify, does this refer to state before or after the {{Patch|Bog Turtle Boogaloo}})

*Sealing without permissions was made impossible in {{Patch|Smoked Zebra}})
* Mimimum STR that allows bashing Palisade (when un[[claim]]ed) is 729 (with [[Sledgehammer]] equipped.)
{{GM|$Build|$Buildings & Construction|Walls & Fen$ces|$Palisade}}

==How to Acquire==

==Sealing==

==Cascade damage==

==Gates==

==Notes==

:[[File:Palisade airlock.jpg]]

*When trying to extend a wall onto forest terrain, you can get an error message saying you can't build there. You can remedy this by plowing, then either paving or stomping to dirt.
A frying pan. Needed to [[Fried Egg|fry eggs]] or [[Egg & Bacon|bacon]], make [[pancake]]s, and other meals.

==How to Acquire==

You need to build a cast using 5 [[Casting Material]] directly next to a [[Smelter]] or [[Stack Furnace]] via the Frying Pan recipe. The cast can be picked up until it has been filled. Light the smelter or furnace, 1 piece of coal is sufficient. Place two bars of any [[Bar of Any Common Metal|Common metal]] into the cast and wait for it to cool down for 8 real time hours. Crack it open and pick up the pan.

The quality of the Frying Pan affects the quality of the [[pancake]], [[Fried Egg]], or other products you make with it.

==How to Use==

To make [[Fried Egg]]s, [[pancake]]s, or other foods, equip the frying pan and craft the food over a lit fire. You will need to have discovered a frying pan (Either by making one or being taught) in order to acquire the recipes.

==Quality==

*Frying Pan quality = <math>\frac{ {_{q}Metal* 3 + _{q}Casting Material}}{4}</math>{{Verify||Casting formula}}
*Food Quality = <math>\frac{(_{q}Food *3) + _{q}FryingPan}{4}</math>

== Notes ==

* Requires two bars of metal instead of one, as of update {{Patch|Burning Harmonica}}
* Currently the animation of the character pouring metal into the cast features a smelter's iron ladle, a tool which has not been implemented so far.
Thanks for explaining to me why it is you do the things you do.
I honestly had no idea the amount of thought that goes into wiki pages. I sort of came here with no respect for the thought/work that goes into a wiki page which i've learned from already as I do understand a lot now, i'm trying to be mindful now of what changes I make or what facts i need to check.
Hi,

I've been looking at some pages and I know stats/info for the game changes every world, how do you find out what the new info is?
Do you have to experiment? or do you grab source code and spit through that?

Like for example, the [[Giant Puffball]] says Infobox data in need of additional verification"

How does one verify this data?
[[Category:Pottery]]
A treeplanter's pot is an important tool used with [[Soil]] or [[Localized Resources|Bat Guano]], [[Water]], a [[Herbalist Table]] and any one of the tree "seeds" such as an [[Apple Core]], [[Fir Cone]], or [[Mulberry]] to grow a new [[Tree]] (full list). The [[quality]] is important for treeplanter's pots as it is one of the factors in determining the tree's quality.
<br><br>

==How to Use==

#Place 4x [[Soil]], [[Mulch]], or [[Localized Resources|Bat Guano]] units into the pot (left-click on the soil, right-click on the pot)
#Place 1.0L of [[water]] into the pot (left-click on the pot, right-click on the water source).
#After the pot is filled with soil and water, put the tree seed into the pot by left-clicking on the seed and right-clicking on the pot.
#Place the filled pot onto a [[Herbalist Table]] and leave it there for 6 in-game hours (136 minutes realtime).
#Plant the sapling within one in-game day (8 real-life hours) of sprouting or else it dies and you have to repeat the process. You plant a tree by 'holding' the pot ('left-click and drag') then right-clicking on the exact spot you want to plant your tree (select the Plant option).

To empty the contents of the pot at any time, right-click on the pot and then select the Empty option.

==How to Acquire==

To make a Treeplanter's Pot, you need to fire an [[Unfired Treeplanter's Pot]] in a [[Kiln]]:

*Use the craft menu to mold the clay, and then fire the unburnt [[{{PAGENAME}}]] in a [[Kiln]] with 8 branches loaded.
*After 36 minutes you will get an empty Treeplanter's Pot.

==Quality==
*[[Unfired Treeplanter's Pot]] Quality =<math>\frac{_{q}Clay*3 + _{q}PottersWheel}{4}</math> and is [[softcap|softcapped]] by <math>\sqrt[3]{Dexterity*Masonry*Farming}</math>

*[[Treeplanter's Pot]] Quality = <math>2*_qUnburnt + _qFuel + _qKiln\over 4</math>

== Skills Effecting Treeplanting ==

*Plant Lore "greater success"
*Woodsmanship "greater success"
*Forestry "significantly greater success"
*Druidic Rite "greatest possible"

Note: The seed's chances of sprouting are increased solely on the above skills.

[[User:SanCoca|SanCoca]]. I just fixed the Irminsul page for you. The Infobox template calls need to go first, and there was no need to add the 'name' and 'image' parameters. Why you would deviate from that standard, while RoB is full of example pages, kinda beats me. Not paying attention comes to my mind here. I light of that I suggest you try to learn some of the RoB-wiki defaults quickly. --[[User_talk:MvGulik|<i><font color="#666" size="2px">.MvGulik.</font></i>]] 02:35, 19 February 2019 (EST)
