Cheesemaking
Fill a curding tub with milk and rennet. Rennet is created by cooking intestines and vinegar into clay jars at a cauldron. As long as the tub has at least 1.0L of milk and 0.1L of rennet, it'll produce one Cheese Curd every 40 minutes (real-time). Curd can can be either eaten for 1 strength FEP or four of them can be used to fill a cheese tray. Cheese trays placed on a cheese rack will slowly turn into cheese. The location of the rack determines which type of cheese is produced. 'Cabin' means inside a Timber House, Log Cabin, or Stone Mansion. 'Mine' refers to either caves or mines. This stage 1 cheese can be further aged into stage 2 cheese, and so forth (refer to flow chart below). The time of each stage is dependent upon the type of cheese being made.

There are only 4 stages. There are 12 cheeses in total, including Generic Gouda.
*Cave Cheddar is bugged and will result in Generic Gouda at the moment (World 7).
*Slicing cheese from a cheese tray has a small chance of producing The Perfect Hole.

I was thinking of creating a subsection in this page about cave-ins. I'd also like to mention that there isn't a page for the object that people call Cave-in Boulder. --Deadguy60 (talk) 20:26, 30 August 2013 (EDT)
Mining Strategy (archived)
You can mine zig-zagged lines north south east and west without getting cave-ins and putting mine supports down everywhere. This method is best for mining tunnels to do prospecting. Start by putting a mine support down with this you can do a zigzag in any direction listed above. To start mine 3 tiles in the direction that will be zig-zagged then turn right or left mine 2 tiles then another 2 tiles in the direction your going then back whichever direction you first chose and repeat. Doing this will not create any straight line longer than 3 tiles. DO NOT use this technique for going diagnal it always causes cave-ins when leaving the mine support radius.

The zig-zag pattern can be easily walkable by removing the center tile in the zig-zag. To do so is tricky and often ends in a cave-in. You must stand behind the center tile near the wall

Stand on the X tile and mine the center W tile. You will be mining diagonally.
It might be best just to build and space out mine supports to safely create the straight path.
How to mine
Mining requires building a mine hole or cave. Have a stone axe (slow) or pickaxe (very fast) equipped and use Adventure [A] -> Mine [M] and click on a black tile. Walls within 50 tiles of a cave entrance cannot be mined. Mining drains stamina based on the tool used and the hardness of the tile relative to a character's mining ability. Make sure to bring plenty of drink to restore stamina quickly.

Using a torch or Miner's helmet for light will help drastically when mining, particularly when working older mines whose ore deposits are located far away from the minehole. Note however that using a pickaxe requires both hands, thus making a miner's helm the only portable light source that can be used. (Note: Use of current custom clients with Night vision negates the need for light sources if turned on.)

The world consists of multiple layers--the surface and five underground layers. Caves and mines all are part of the same underworld; a hearthling can tunnel from one mine or cave to another. In the underworld, if a hearthling selects 'mine' and clicks on a wall, he or she will attempt to chip out the wall, either extracting Ore from the tile or chipping out stones. Whether the hearthling is able to extract ore (or stones) depends on the soak of the wall. That is to say, some wall tiles will require more strength (and/or better tools) to extract ore or rock from. If the hearthling has enough strength to mine it, the tile will be converted into floor. Ore exists in veins, so you may very well mine nothing but rock.

Note: Because World 4 has brought an entirely new mining system there is confusion.
One thing to be said, you need strength in order to mine mining spots. The higher your strength is, the faster the mining spot will be mined. Also, mining spots now contain layers, which means that each tile can be mined multiple times before it converts to floor. Each time you mine there is a chance to get stone or ore. Whether it's ore or stone depends entirely on tile - tile that belongs to vein will not give stones, and tile that does not belong to vein will not give ore. Mined ore is automatically placed in inventory, mined stones are dropped on the ground.

Ores occur in nodes much like everything else on the map. Sometimes the nodes will intersect cave walls, and sometimes you have to dig into the wall for some distance before finding ore. For you to mine a cave wall, you need to click on the wall that is at least 50 tiles from an entrance. Depending on the Q of your tool and your strength, you will start to mine that wall or will receive an error message such as the following.

A miner should have the Nature/Industry Personal Beliefs slider set completely towards Industry to have the maximum 20% chance of mining ore containing metal. When the Nature/Industry slider is set to the middle, the miner has only a 10% chance.

Messages that occur while mining (each message means 10-15 more Mining ability to mine):
* You don't even manage to scratch that rock.
* That rock is very much too hard for you to mine.
* That rock is much too hard for you to mine.
* That rock is slightly too hard for you to mine.
* That rock is just slightly too hard for you to mine.

Using a better quality tool and better strength means more tiles to mine available. Strength can be increased by equipment such as a Bear Tooth Talisman or Bear Cape or temporarily with buffs from wine or Boar Tusk Snuff.
Mining Difficulty and Ore Quality
Underground there are 3 types of mining related nodes. Ore veins, Rock quality and Hardness nodes. These nodes are all placed randomly and have no relation to each other except under chance conditions. All rock that is mined will be of the quality equal to the rock quality node (or the base quality if there is no node) of that area. This applies to both stones mined from "empty" rock and ore mined from an ore vein. Finding a soft, high quality ore vein is therefor a very good stroke of luck. It is also worth noting that the quality of mining products is based on the same nodes as clay, so nearby ore quality will be decreased by digging ball clay from shallow water in caves.

There is only one relation between hardness and quality. As you descend levels of the world, each one gains base quality and base hardness. Quality base goes up by 10 each layer, however it is unknown the exact amount hardness goes up.

:There are five underground layers.
:The black areas represent solid rock.
:Caves are natural passageways and they only appear on the first underground layer.
:You can use mining to dig a path between any two things (minehole or cave) as long as they're on the same layer.
:Building a minehole on any layer will allow you to access the next layer below it.
:Deeper layers have a higher minimum quality for ore (q10, q20, q30, q40, q50 respectively), but you can get lucky and find higher.
:Deeper layers have a higher minimum hardness, but you can get unlucky and find harder.
:Silver deposits do not exist on layer 1. You must dig deeper.
:Gold deposits do not exist on layer 1 or 2. You must dig deeper.
:Silver and Gold do not have a quality, other ores do.
:Prospecting searches the layer below the layer you are currently standing."
Average Ore Per Tile
You get about 3.3 ore per tile on average when mining a vain. This equates to the following numbers.
1.51 tiles to get 1 bar of any metal
3.79 tiles to get 1 wrought iron bar
7.57 tiles per 1 gold nugget
3.79 tiles for 1 silver nugget.

If the results are not proven or the results are fishy then don't fill them in. Wikia is not the place for untrue info. Perhaps everything after stage 2 should be emptied and redone with the use of multiple sources.Sami1337 14:53, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

The last two levels seem to be pretty much an unreliable tangle, could someone with data sort it out please? Ar-Pharazon 10:06, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Fixed it up a bit. Musky Milben is still unknown territory for me, and I'm still looking to try the rest of the Jorbonzola transformations. If Jorbonzola is not our tier 4, then Musky Milben evolves into something, that will evolve into our twelfth cheese.
Maybe it should be noted that certain cheese transformations vary greatly on time. Cellar-Cave Cheddar is amazingly fast, within the span of 16 RL hours. Tasty Emmentaler to Musky Milben is amazingly slow, my rough guess is at least one RL week. Most other cheeses seem to follow the 56 hour rule, but maybe this should be looked into. -Lightning4 18:00, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

cellar chedder=6 days, brodgar blue =4 days, jorb = 7days, midnight blue = 21 days
If thats right then midnight takes a total of 38 game days to complete.
Which would be about 13 real days. Wow two weeks for that :|

If the recipes are flawed they shouldn't be on here at all. I understand groups of players are keeping the recipes to themselves but the correct recipes will have to come to light at some point.

The recipes for Jorb, brodgar, and midnight are correct. I'll see about trading for the others once I can kill bears again.--Veuri 10:40, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

I think its safe to say any further exploration of cheese recipes is halted until domestication is introduced, unless of course you live on/near grassland.Veuri 07:54, September 9, 2009 (UTC)

I think the lvl 2+ cheeses should be deleted and readded only for those the person adding it is sure about (this way there won't be a few false one with most being correct), I deleted it already but it was reverted.

At least some of the cheese recipes of stage 2 and up are correct. A better way of disputing a recipe would be to leave a note on this talk page about which recipe you think is wrong. If multiple people agree it is wrong, it probably is and can be fixed. Otherwise, individual user error can propagate into the charts. For the time being, I feel the disclaimer to be sufficient. -Erik the Blue 18:18, September 29, 2009 (UTC)

Building a herbalist's table requires plant fibres, which may be difficult to find for new players.

1. Ask somebody nicely for plant fibres.

2. If nobody's willing to donate or trade, and you can't acquire them by less legal means, then harvest your own fibres from hemp or flax. To get those, dry wild windsown weeds (WWW) on a drying frame, and with a random chance you get a flax or hemp seed. Plant seeds into ploughed land, wait, harvest, gather the fibres, repeat. While drying WWWs on the herbalist's table is much faster than on a frame (Real time: 2.6h instead of 16h), you can start farming without a table and build one after you get hemp or flax.

How to use
Place any of the precursors of items mentioned above to the herbalist table and wait. Tree's take about 2.5 hours to sprout from treeplanter's pots; Silkworm Eggs takes about 8 hours to hatch; Fresh Tea Leaves take 40 minutes to dry into green tea leaves; those ferment into Black Tea Leaves in about 8-12hours if left on the table. As currently (18. However making black tea is beneficial if your Herbalist table q > Fresh Tea Leaves q)

You can also dry WWWs on the table, but this is only useful if your table is >q10, as the default drying frame will be q10 and produce q10 seeds from default q10 WWWs. If you are looking for wheat, drying WWWs on the table is NOT recommended. If a WWW dries into a wheat seed and is left on the table, it will germinate and be lost for farming. Refer to beermaking information on intentional germination. Wheat seeds, once germinated, will not change anymore, so the table is safe for beermaking purposes.

Quality
The quality of the herbalist table affects everything produced by it.
Don't mine near the edge of the circle, because it won't prevent cave-ins.

:<SuperDaddy> Does it count if the radius is touching part of the tile?
:<loftar> Well, to be precise, it needs to touch the exact center of the tile.
:<loftar> Also, I should probably reveal so much that existing cave-in boulders *vastly* increase the likelyhood of new cave-ins
Clay Cauldrons require water and branches to function, and can hold a maximum of 30 liters of water and 15 branches or 3 blocks of wood. While functional, clay cauldrons can be used to process tea leaves into tea and silkworm cocoons into silk filaments and making Ring of Brodgar Dough, among other things.

Compare the a normal Cauldron a Clay Cauldrons differs in that it:
* halves the quality of the water inside it.
* takes one tick (the length of time equal to one branch) to heat up enough to be used. (5 minutes, 33 seconds).

When the cauldron is used in crafting an item, the cauldrons effect of the outcome of the quality in the formula is shown below. Note that all Clay Cauldrons have a default quality of 0.
Cauldrons require water and fuel (i.e. branches, charcoal) to function. The qualities of the water, fuel, ingredients and of the cauldron itself affect the quality of the result differently depending on the product.

After loading the cauldron with fuel, click "Light" to begin boiling the water. A metal cauldron does not need time to heat water like a clay cauldron.

Picking up a lit cauldron removes all fuel from it and hence extinguishes the flame. This is useful for saving water although note that you lose all the fuel and cannot get it back.
Just putting this here for anyone trying to decipher the equation.
The approximate formula is.
Goldbeater = ( intest * 10 + vinegar * 5 + ( (caldron + water)/2 ) * 3)/18
The formula might be wrong but there is a strong likelihood the game does strange rounding errors trying to calculate the goldbeater. Because of this this formula is sometimes 1Q higher then the real value.

Similar to the Vending Stand, but instead of coins it uses items.

How To Build
Build > Construction > Barte Stand

Ownership
Stands follow a special rule for ownership:

The player who first puts an item into the stand is the owner of the stand, and is the one who sets prices and loads items for sale. Other players may interact with the stand to buy items even if they would normally lack privileges to interact with items on the claim.

How to Use
How to Add Items for Sale
# Once the Barter Stand is built, open up its UI (User Interface) with an interaction click.
# Next, pick up an item from your inventory you want to sell. Left click it onto an empty barter slot.
#* Barter stands always have five barter slots.
#* You can add additional items of the same type (but not necessarily the same quality) to the same barter slot.

How to Set a Price
# Once the Barter Stand is built, open up its UI (User Interface) with an interaction click.
# Next, click the "Change" button in the barter slot. You can now set what you are requesting for by clicking on an item in the inventory.
# A small "Item Type" window will appear. You can use this to switch from a specific item to a type (e.g. "Stinging Nettle" versus "Any String"), to adjust the minimum requested quality, or to request more than one item as payment.

To change ownership
# First all items must be removed from the barter stand.
# Then place any item in any barter slot and remove it. This will free the barter stand to other users.

Notes
*The quality of the items used affects how many items can be stocked in the Barter Stand, shown by the "slots" entry at the bottom.
*Sales are always of individual items; adding additional items to a specific barter slot lets the barter stand make more sales before needing to restock.
*Only items already in your inventory can be requested, making it difficult for those without a certain object (such as metal or a valuable crafted item) to obtain it through a stand.
*When the Barter Stand is destroyed, all items in the stand are lost.
*It is intended that barter stands can change owners if there are no items for sale. However, this is currently bugged.
*Barter stands follow the same rules for theft as any other container. That is, a barter stand built on unclaimed land allows anyone to take items without paying for them; a barter stand built on a village claim allows villagers to freely take items; etc.
*Another use of Barter/Vending stands is to discover items. The owner of the stand can't discover items this way as the owner can't buy from their own stand.

The only way to get around the bug where users of barter stands cant be changed is by removing all items from the barter stand, then placing any item in the sails slot and remove it. This will unlock the barter stand to other users.
