The smelter is used to get cast iron from iron ore. Note that there is a bug associated with smelters.

How to Use
Fill it with ore. Smelter can hold up to 25 pieces of ore. Fuel it with 4 pieces of charcoal by left-clicking the charcoal and right-clicking the ore smelter. Then right-click the smelter again and select Light. It takes 20 minutes to smelt a single load.
Formula
The formula used to determine the outcome quality of the bars you receive from smelting ore is simply the average of the qualities of the smelter and the coal used to fuel it.
(C+S) / 2, Where C is the average of the coal used, and S is the quality of smelter.
