Technically Strange Roots are produced by the act of unearthing a tree stump. So far the tool used seems to have no effect in the chance or amount of generated Strange Roots. (Used tool seems to only effect the speed and/or stamina drain when unearthing a tree stump).

Last world I did get the feeling tree-type might have some effect on the chance of generating Strange Roots. But I did not get any hard data on this.
