The way they affect the metal quality is the same as crucibles, they can never increase its quality but if the finery quality is lower than the metal it might lower it (provided that the coal doesnt compensate for it).

Finery forges are used to refine cast iron into bloom, which can then be worked by a smith in order to produce wrought iron. Place up to nine units of cast iron bars into the finery forge along with 2 charcoal and set alight, after some time the metal will either turn into valuable bloom or worthless slag.

Finery forges can also be used to convert stacks of a hundred Coins into a bar of metal, and stacks of ten coins into a nugget. Doing this takes 2 units of charcoal, and will not affect the quality of the metal.

A finery forge in combination with the fuel used can softcap bloom during the process of making wrought iron.
