Clay is a core ingredient for Pottery. The quality of the products made by the clay is based upon the quality of the clay, the kiln used, and the branches provided to fuel the kiln; it is also softcapped by the dexterity of the pottery crafter. The quality of the clay (with the exception of Bone Clay variety) is dictated by the quality of the node it is collected from and is hardcapped by survival.

As of the May 30th 2010 Clay update, clay has been diversified into multiple types. Recipes and buildings which do not specify a type required will accept any of them, and multiple types may be used together for such recipes/buildings.
Also, the clay update made the Nature/Industry personal belief slider influence the success rate of gathering clay. With full nature, success rate is half the normal, and with full industry, the success rate is twice the normal, in which case you can gather two pices of clay from each Gray clay and Cave clay instance.

Clay forms are as follows:

How to Acquire

Ball clay is obtained by digging in shallow water, whilst Acre clay is obtained by digging on mudflats. Simply digging on either terrain type will not yield clay unless there is a clay node present. However, on occasion it is possible to receive a single piece of 10 quality clay even when not digging on a node. A node can be identified if you receive multiple units of quality 10 clay, or a unit of clay over 10 quality.

Digging from a clay deposit can slowly reduce the quality of the point also. Once the quality drops to 10, further digging will exhaust that part of the deposit.

It takes approximately 3.5 seconds to dig up one unit of clay.

Gray clay and Cave clay are not dug up like conventional Ball and Acre clay, but instead appear in the same manner as Mussels and other forageables do. To gather them, you have to "Pick" them, as you would with plants.

Bone clay is crafted, from five units of Bone ash (produced from bones fired in a kiln), one Cave clay and a single Feldspar. The quality of the produced Bone clay is influenced by your Intelligence and Perception, and appears to be affected by the quality of the Feldspar more than the quality of the other ingredients.

There are nodes for clay in caves as well, so it is possible to find cave clay of quality higher than 10

For more information on finding clay, see the Finding high quality water, clay, and soil page.

Tips, Tricks, & Possible Bugs

  • Using a fresh character to dig clay can net exponentially greater amounts of clay for wall building or other needs where quality doesn't matter.
  • When digging for lower quality than what the node's peak is, start the farthest out from the center and work your way in. This is reported to provide more clay over time than just digging straight down at one spot
