They don't really signify a merchant, the robes moreso signify a person has either great wealth, or a great industry in the silk business.

Merchant Robes have a form of "pocket" that increases inventory space by 1 horizontal row: the wearer's default inventory will become 4x5, 6x5 with a backpack and 8x7 with a backpack and 2 traveller's sack above q20.
