Just in case. There is a Legacy specific discussion page.

Available metals are: Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper and Tin.

How to Acquire

A mine hole must be built on a paved 3x3 area.

A mine hole may be built anywhere. In order to place a mine hole near available ore, one should prospect the area first, however, it is not necessary. Prospecting requires Rustroot Extract to determine the location of an ore vein. If you don't have access to rustroot, building a mine may just take more underground labour before it digs up any ore.

Notes

Note: With the start of World 7, straight mining and zigzag mining without minesupports has been fixed. Avoiding cave-ins while also mining without supports is now impossible, although mining within the range of a Mine Support is absolutely safe.

A catch-22 therefore arises in that you need a Nugget of Common Metal to build a Mine Support, but you cannot acquire metal until you actually begin mining (save for a 10 Numen prayer via Ancestral Worship). It is thus risky to begin a mining endeavor, as you can't avoid the possibility of a cave-in. It's a good idea to raise your Constitution and/or wear a Miner's Helm where possible to mitigate the danger, appropriate to the level that you're mining on. If you have access to Rustroot, you can prospect before laying down a Mine Hole, which is safer than scraping the sides of a cave looking for metal, but requires more initial investment.

As you can't pave inside a new Mine Hole, you need to dig out a tile to build a Mine Support. This is better done in the middle of the wall than in a corner.

Since the 1/11/2011 restart, Mine Holes will now lead you to the second layer of the world, which can also be acessed by cave entrances.

Mines can now be built everywhere, but it's not guaranteed there will be ore. Thus, Prospecting does not lose it`s worth. The mineholes are way more expensive - you need Hardened Leather to build them. Lastly, Mine Supports are required as the mine may collapse if you do not build them.

Since mine holes can be quite expensive it's usually a good idea to make sure there will be metals in the mine before you construct the mine hole.

A mine hole built inside your compound should be walled off with a Palisade or Brickwall as it is possible for raiders to tunnel into a mined area from elsewhere and gain entrance to a village or compound through an unsecured mine. However such wall should be built at least one space away from the mine hole on the north and west sides to avoid getting stuck while leaving the mine. Or you can surround the tiles in building signs, which prevent people from going up the minehole to the surface. You can leave one tile empty to enter the minehole from, people should still not be able to enter. This trick also works for the ladder at the bottom of a minehole.

If you want to get the maximum amount of metal from your node, build the minehole away from the node and mine towards it; this prevents the minehole's area from deleting the walls the ore is, saving 49 tiles of ore.
