"The Ferryman's Silver saves you once from drowning. If you wear this ring when your character would drown, he will instead lose the ring, and be returned to the shore where he last stepped into the water."
Craft > Clothes & Equipment > Xtras & Accessories > Jewelry > Silver for the Ferryman
A ring enchanted with a spell that prevents the wearer from drowning. When swimming, the ring's magic knocks you out and teleports you to safety the moment your Stamina has reached 0% and you WOULD take an Asphyxiation damage tick, preventing the Asphyxiation damage while causing a Concussion. After teleporting you, the ring breaks. If wearing two ferryman rings, only one is broken.
How it works
The place it tries to teleport you to is firstly the last piece of solid ground you stood on. However, if the ring doesn't know where that is (for example, if you entered the water via a boat instead of swimming, then leave the boat or get your boat smashed, the ring gets confused and doesn't know where to put you) the ring has a failsafe where it teleports you to your hearthfire instead. This effect will occur even if you're KOed and treading deep water and start drowning.
Remarkably, the ring's teleport works in combat. Even if in combat and being struck, the ring will still teleport you to shore or your hearth, instantly breaking combat as well. This gives you the possibility of escaping combat by forcibly drowning yourself and teleporting away. If you want to force being teleported to your hearthfire, simply enter a boat and row into deep water, then exit the boat and drown.
Clarification: between KO and stamina running out, the attacker has a window of opportunity to simply loot off the ring(s)!
Escape Plan
If you wanted to build around this idea, you could carry a Coracle and ferryman ring equipped on you at all times.
Should you suddenly find yourself in a situation you want to get out of, flee toward the nearest deep water source.
Enter the coracle in shallow water, preferably with as little stamina as possible, then row to deep water, exit the coracle in the same direction you're rowing so that an attacker behind you gets stuck on your coracle, swim to your limits, and drown, teleporting you safely to your hearthfire with a minor concussion and all your belongings intact.
Theoretically, if you have enough distance on your attacker, you could plow the ground with your hands right before entering your coracle to empty your stamina bar as much as possible.
This plan is high-risk, high-reward. If your attacker is right on top of you, or worse has their own boat or coracle, it's possible they KO you while you're in deep water before you teleport, which will invariably spell your doom. But if you have enough distance, and sufficiently confuse your aggressor with your nonsensical actions, combat will instantly cease and you'll suddenly vanish before their eyes.
Notes
- If you are KOed in a boat and the boat is smashed, as is often done by roaming sea bandits, the ring CAN save you even while you're KOed, but the attackers will almost surely steal the ring off of you before you drown, at which point the magic is broken and you will die.
- You cannot hold items on your cursor or equip/unequip items while swimming, so make sure the ring is equipped before entering the water. If you start swimming and the ring is not equipped, there is no way to equip it mid-swim.
