The roundpole fence is not able to protect you from thieves or boars, and is very easily destroyed.
How to Acquire
Begin by constructing a cornerpost and then right click on the cornerpost to expand the fence.
To make a gate, right click a corner post and select "Prepare for gate." You can set the gate to be two spaces wide or three. Build the second corner post up. Finally, right click on one of the cornerposts and select "Build gate." Note that the direction the gate-doors open is the outside of the gate . This matters when adding a lock to a gate.
Notes
- Fences cannot be built on dirt.
- (Terrain) Can't be build on Ice.
Open Animal/Horse pen
(Not really the best place for this tip. But the Roundpole Fence is the cheapest/easiest to use for this.)
- Considering the following facts.
- Cornerposts of gates can be destroyed without affecting the existing gate.
- Open gates acts as closed gates for free roaming animals. (gate direction don't matters in this)
Ergo: One can build an animal pen, with gates only, that will holds the animal but don't blocks hearthlings from walking trough them. (kinda like a real parking-place when empty. Although the open gates might be somewhat of an eye-sore)

- Hairy Mallard (2016-12-14)◎ >"Added bigger gates, When you place a cornerpost in preparation for a gate, you may now choose to place the second cornerpost two or three tiles apart, by simply holding the placement cursor farther away. If the latter, you will place and build a three tile wide gate, rather than a two tile wide one. Otherwise pretty self-explanatory. May add even larger gates in the future."
