Poppy pods can be eaten as are, but can also be dried on a herbalist table for Game: 3d (Real: 21h 53m) into dried poppy pods. Dried poppy pods can be ground to poppy grist, which can be boiled in a cauldron and thus reduced to opium
How to Acquire
Can be obtained at the secret stage (After the last and which is fairly random in terms of when it is actually reached) of the Poppy Crop.
Generally allowing poppies a few extra Real-Life days after they have fully grown before you harvest them will yield poppy pods, with a greater percentage of your poppy crop reaching this secret stage the longer you wait (more testing needed)
