A Firebrand is needed to light a fire, a fireplace and furnaces.
How to Acquire
First, make sure your stamina is above 66. Crafting a firebrand takes about half your stamina bar. The game only ever checks if your current stamina is above 20, happily letting you drill up to 95% of the hourglass before telling you are too tired (and wasting all the stamina spent.)
(Note: you need to fuel fireplace/furnace/etc. beforehand!)
After crafting the firebrand, it will attach to your cursor and burn up quickly, and if you drop it, it will disappear, so stand close to the target. With two sticks in your inventory, use the recipe and wait, this takes a good while. When it's done you will hear it ignite, now quickly right click the unlit object and wait until it lights up, this also takes a little time. The firebrand may burn up before the fireplace or furnace is lit, in which case you need to try again from the start.
You can also make a firebrands by right clicking a branch onto a lit fire.
It is possible to make firebrands from a fireplace, IF the firepit is already full of fuel, otherwise it will just add as fuel. Since Merry Igloo! (2021-12-19) patch, you can ALT + click a branch on any station with open fire (for example, Kiln) to light it up, regardless of fuel status.
TIP: you can freely move around, while keeping the firebrand on your cursor, by holding down CTRL key and clicking normally.
Notes
- Firebrands that you put in your inventory turn into Ash.
- Because making firebrands takes so much stamina, it's far more efficient to have a fireplace burning constantly while you're working and to use a Torch to light other objects from it.
- How long a firebrand burns is random. You can get a rare Experience Event from having a firebrand burn for over a minute in your hand.
