Building the Wilderness Beacon allows you to set a password for it. Another character can spawn in from the character creation area (the area where you choose a name). There you need to find the skull totem near the graveyard and type in the password, then choose a name and burn yourself into the world. This allows the new character to spawn at the beacon, which destroys it and creates a Hearth Fire.
The Beacon lasts at most one hour after lit. If it is not used in that time, it is destroyed.
