It's a female duck. Its male counterpart is the Mallard Drake. Can be domesticated into Ducks.
Hunting
Mallards almost excursively hang around in water. Anything dropped into a body of water used to instantly disappear, but (since "Fluid Incline" -patch) items now persist in shallow water until they de-spawn, same as if dropped on dry land. This makes it viable to hunt mallards with a Sling. (Requires Archery to unlock 'Shoot' and 3 Marksmanship to deal enough damage to one-shot.
Catching
It can be necessary to catch Mallards alive, to complete a Credo or to acquire domesticated waterfowl.
"Catching" as a quest objective means you need to grab a live one (from the wild, releasing already grabbed one won't work.) Fisherman and Hunter, very least, are relevant Credos.
You simply right-click a mallard to chase it, but their speed and flight means a strategy is required:
Horseback
Horse is faster than a mallard at (3 or 4?) speed. Approach the mallard from a direction that doesn't make it flee to deep water.
Snekkja
Faster than a mallard. Opposite to the horse, startle them into open waters. Snekkja might "squash" a mallard if you directly ram into one and it has no time to startle and flee.
Friend
Another player can startle a mallard into your direction, they don't seem to have the ability to change direction like some other birds (or prioritize fleeing the first player who startled them.)
Solo
There might be a trial-and-error way to catch a mallard with just a rowboat. Get as close as possible before it flees, then right-click. May require frame/pixel perfect execution or just dumb luck.
