The Primitive Casting-Rod is, as the name suggests, a tool used to catch fish, one of the staple food source early on for beginners. It must be equipped to one hand and is used by the Fish command on a body of water. For more information check the Fishing page.
The Primitive Casting-Rod uses lures instead of bait.
How to Acquire
Create a pole with the crafting recipe.
Now, you need to add a line, a hook, and some kind of fishing lure before you can use the fishing pole.
Hook
The most accessible hook is the bone hook, which is made from bones, easily obtained from animals, particularly chickens and squirrels. The metal hook requires a Nugget of Common Metal.
As of Fishing for Finery (2021-04-25) fishline is now a crafted item with 8 varieties. The simplest one is Bushcraft Fishline, made out of 2 String.
To fish with this casting rod you need to have some kind of lure equipped. Early accessible fishing lures are: Woodfish, Rock Lobster Lure, Feather Fly and Pinecone Plug. If you have a farm set up, then Poppy Wobbler is a good choice too.
To equip the fishing pole with fishing line and other necessities, left click on the item to select it and then right click it onto the fishing pole. If you want to swap something out, you can take it apart again by right clicking on the fishing pole and selecting Unequip, which will return all the parts to your inventory.
How to Fish
Cast into any body of water.
After a few seconds, a list of fish appear with the chance to catch each type of fish. The number of options to appear is based on the character's Will and Survival.
The type of fish that appear and the chance to catch them are determined by your fishing gear, the moon phase, and the local fish node, along with a chance to catch that particular fish. The first percentage is the chance that the fish will bite and the second percentage is the chance to land the fish if it bites. The final percentage is the likelihood that you will obtain the fish.
If you do not select an option, you will automatically pick the fish with the highest catching chance.
Notes
- Parka Blewit (2018-04-23) now shows "Chance to Bite" and the "Chance to Land"
- Fishing mechanics were changed in Swan Fishing (2017-01-19)
Game Development
- Swinish Alchemy (2024-11-24)◎ >"You can now switch out fishing rod pieces without interrupting the fishing action. E.g. change line/lure/bait/hook without having to re-initiate the fishing action."
- Swinish Alchemy (2024-11-24)◎ >""Tick"s are now only bait while bloated, much like Leeches."
- Fishing for Finery (2021-04-25)◎ >"Fishlines. The various string items previously passing for fishlines (e.g. "Spindly Taproot") are no longer the hot things to use. Instead, there are 8 new, craftable fishlines. ..."
