How to Acquire/Use (Domestic)
- Build a chicken coop for breeding hens and cocks. When a chick is placed inside a chicken coop with sufficient fodder, it will turn into a Hen or Cock.
- Animal Husbandry enables you to breed chickens. A chicken coop, a cock and a hen are required to produce fertile Chicken Egg, that will hatch into chicks.
- Hens require food, and if left in your inventory/storage will die, leaving a low quality Dead Hen. This will occur within 24 hours.
- A hen can be slaughtered via the "Wring Its Neck" option to convert it into a Dead Hen.
How to Acquire/Use (Wild)
- You need Hunting skill to pick up wild chickens.
- For the longest time, Chickens stood placid while you picked them up one by one. However after Chicken Run (2020-12-13) the entire flock will start fleeing from you when you come close enough, meaning you can usually only catch one or two by sprinting.
- You can try spooking the flock into a direction of a Fox in hopes that it will start chasing and killing the chickens (they will stay on the ground to be picked up. Caution: Fox can aggro you for stealing it's prey. Badger and Wolverine can also aggro and kill chickens [Verify: Do Badger/Wolverine aggro/kill chickens.] but they can also aggro you!
- If killed via combat, it will leave a Dead Hen as its corpse. This means using a sling might be viable way to kill some wild chickens.
- A hen can be slaughtered via the "Wring Its Neck" option to convert it into a Dead Hen.
Notes
- If you do not have a Chicken Coop or fodder, you can keep your chickens alive longer than 3 days by releasing them and catching them again
- Hunting wild chickens is viable source of Feathers, Entrails, and Bones in the early game. Pick them up, wring their necks, return to your camp/base when inventory is full and pluck/clean them there. All products except meat can be stockpiled for easy storage.
