Gold Nuggets are obtained by smelting Ore that contains gold in an Ore Smelter. They can also be crafted into a Bar of Gold and melted back into gold nuggets for purposes of discovering.

Digging Clay in shallow water will very rarely result in both a single Clay, and Gold Nugget, being added to the inventory at the end of the action timer.
