Entrances to caves can be found around the world on the side of cliffs. When entered, they lead to a cave.

Caves function similarly to Mineholes. They lead underground. Currently, all caves lead to Level 1, can only be found on the surface, and cannot be artificially created.

Caves are often used as small camps or homesteads, since they prevent decay and can lead to metal. Since Mineholes can be expensive to build, caves will usually be your best bet for getting access to metal early-game.

Special flora and fauna native to the underground spawn here, such as Glimmermoss, Cavebulbs and Stalagooms, and Bats, Trolls and Green Ooze.

Anytime a cave appears on your minimap while on the surface, and anytime you enter a cave, there is a chance you can trigger an experience.

When fermenting cheese, setting cheese in a cave counts as setting it in a Minehole.

Caves are much more common in Hafen than they were in Legacy Haven.

Flora

Anytime while adventuring around, you can find Cavebulbs, Stalagooms, Cave Coral and Glimmermoss on the ground. They are forageables, and therefor you can pick them.

Stalagooms are a small, white mushroom. They can be studied, but you can also eat them if you have unlocked the perk that allows you to do so in the Cave Hermit credo.

Cavebulbs are highly sought after, because they themselves give Psyche when eaten, a very hard to raise attribute since few foods give it, but can also be used to make Butter-steamed Cavebulbs, one of the best Psyche foods.

Glimmermoss is even more valuable than Cavebulbs, as they are one of the best Curiosities in the game.

Cave Coral is a decent Curiosity, and can be used to make a Cave Coral Ring, a primitive ring.

You may also rarely find Cave Clay, a green type of clay, in shallow water underground, and even rarer simply lying on the ground. It is a Fine Clay, making it very precious and valuable in the crafting of Bone Clay.

Fauna

There is less fauna in caves than on the surface, but they all are more unique and interesting.

The most common are Bats, which are aggressive, can fly, attack in packs, and can be quite dangerous to a new Hearthling.

Boreworms are usually seen deeper down, but can spawn on any level. They can burrow into the ground and come up somewhere else like Moles, and are quite tough. Their hides, when dry, act as leather, even when they haven't been tanned yet.

Green Ooze, or more commonly referred to as Slimes, are green, sentient piles of a gelatinous substance. They can sometimes spawn on a tile that has been mined, and although they aren't too strong alone, when critically hurt they split into multiple more Slimes, meaning you must kill them fast. They give Cave Slime when killed, which is used in some foods, and can even be eaten raw once you've unlocked the required perk from the Cave Hermit credo, the same one that allows you to eat Stalagooms.

However, the rarest creature found in the underground is a Troll.

Trolls are the strongest creatures in the game. They are hostile to everyone but people who have fully completed the Cave Hermit credo. They often take large groups of strong players to kill, drop very valuable loot, and deal high-damage attacks capable of killing quickly, often in just a few hits!
