Swill is food for tame animals, used in Troughs, Chicken Coops, Rabbit Hutches, and Dovecotes. Any fodder placed in these stations will turn into generic Swill. Swill acts like a liquid and can be transported and stored in buckets and barrels. Any building or item with a Swill meter can also be filled directly using a Wheelbarrow, Bucket, Barrel, or Food Trough.

Hovering your cursor over the Swill meter will show you the quantity and quality of Swill contained in it. Removing Swill using a bucket or barrel can be useful for several reasons, including removing low quality fodder from your stations and transferring fodder from one station to another.

Tips

There is a trick to filling Swill much more quickly than normal. Click to pick up a unit of food, then with it floating on your cursor, hold down the shift key and right click the trough. As long as you keep the shift key held down, another unit of food from your inventory will automatically be placed on your cursor, ready to right click again!

Warning: Edible forageables, like Candleberry or Bloated Bolete also count as fodder, so be careful when shift-right clicking as you can lose them.

Food items that can be used as swill

In general, most organic matter can be turned into swill, including seeds. The crop you choose to grow for the purposes of making swill depends on your preference of time vs. space. If you value space efficiency, pumpkin gives the most swill per farm tile, but it grows the slowest. If you value growing speed, beetroot is the fastest growing crop to maturity, followed by carrot. Growing beetroot also gives you the beetroot leaves in addition to the beetroot itself.
